How to replicate folder structure on external drive?
« on: November 27, 2004, 04:10:18 am »

I just purchased an external flash mp3 player (SanDisk).
It appears as new drive E: in Media Center.

My problem is that when I make transfers onto it, all songs get dumped into the ROOT directory, regardless of their place in the folders on my hard drive.

Is there a make to make the transfers so that the orginal folders structure of the songs gets automatically replicated onto the flash player E:?

Of course, I could manually add sub-folders in E: and drag-and-drop the songs that I want directly into the appropriate folder, but that would be very tedious. There must be a better way!

Thanks in advance,
W.

Did you check the options available?

MC11 has some options that aren't available in earlier versions.

Well, I saw the options but can't really make a clue on how to use them properly.

When J RIver introduces some new, big changes, it would be also nice if there were a few words published on how to use this stuff properly.

I tried to copy my playlists to an external folder after defining a playlist folder under Options>Handheld, but nothing seems to happen.

So I do not know at this moment, whether the feature is working at all or whether I simply did something wrong!

I've just tried this with a flash drive:-
Define the flash drive as a handheld - tools/options/handheld
Select Handheld in the action window
Select Synchronize in the handheld's window
Select the playlists to be synched
Select Transfer

All the correct folders were created and populated, including the one I specified for the playlists.

Thanks IanG,

I assume that in my case it does not work. This is what I did:

in Tools/Options/Handheld I define in "Configure remote and fixed drive for detection":

Path: X:\Backup\Media
Name: Sync to Backup
Playlist Path: Playlists

The last one is not very clear, whether it is an absolute path or relative to path. In this case I assume it would create a folder X:Backup\Media\Playlists.
This is one of the items that are not very clearly explained!

Then I Select handheld in the action window.

Now selecting "Synchronize" MC11 hangs and I get 2 entries in the task player with no response, one for MC11 and one for J River WMDM progress.

So in my case it does not seem to work!

Also when I edit "Configure remote and fixed drive for detection" and press OK, MC11 crashes.

Also in "Configure Transfer Options" I have more playlist groups and playlists than displayed. Opening a group displays only the first playlist and does not any scrolling down.

Jaguu

I did the same as you and it worked perfectly - "Playlists" and "\Playlists" both created \Backup\Media\Playlists

Your symptoms sound similar to a problem I had a few weeks back - I created a new library and it worked fine with that.

Hello everybody

I'm also interested in replicating all my music files on a network drive.
I tried the feature to declare a network drive as a 'handheld' and it worked.
But I can't find a possibility to save the files in the needed folder structure.
Normally my folder structure is based on "[ARTIST]\[ALBUM]" with the option to use 'Assorted' for [ARTIST] on Mulit-Artist Albums.
I'm missing this option when I copy the files onto the network drive.
I could find the following options under "Rearrange Upload Folders":
 > None
 > Artist\Album
 > Artist
 > Album
 > Artist-Album
 > Genre\Artist\Album
 > Use filename path

I tried 'None' : All files are copied without folder, not really what I wanted.
I tried 'Artist\Album' : I got a lot of folders since it does not use the 'Assorted' feature.
I tried 'Use filname path' : It works but it uses the complete file path of the original files, for example 'Documents and settings\all users\documents\Music\Artist\Album' and I don't want to put the original files in the root drive to shorten the path.

Is it possible to use only the relative path to the 'base path' defined in the Media Center 'Options'?
Or is there a possibility to get the 'Assorted' feature working in this case?
Or better isn't it possible to freely define the folder structure like in the Library tool 'Rename files from properties' That would be great :-)

PS:
Anyhow I'd like to congratulate the whole team for the wonderful piece of software you've made. I'm testing now v11, I used licenced v9 and v10 before. It was also easy to convince a lot of friends to buy the software too.

Letzebuerger,

We will have to expand the functionality of this in the future.

Jaguu,

If you are still having problems, try with a different folder and path and see if the behavior improves.

Steve,

further testing revealed the following strange behaviour:

Sync to an external memory stick on Drive E: -> OK
Sync to an internal disk to a folder C:\Temp\jaguu\JRTemp - >OK
Sync to an internal disk to a folder X:\Backup\Media -> MC11 hangs and the whole desktop freezes, must kill with Task Manager
I noticed that the freezing already shows up when I click on "Show files" in the handheld section of the Action Window

I only sync a playlist with 5 .jpg image files.

There is no fundamental difference between C: and X: except
D: (source drive) is on disk2, C: ist the first partition of disk 1, X: the second partition of disk1. All are NTFS, basic and all primary partitions.

Also the format of the m3u files seems to be wrong, as clicking on the m3u playlist does not work (saw this same error on another thread). The Drive letter is missing and the there are no CR/LF between the pathnames.

Jaguu,

In the current MC 11, the CR/LF appear to be fine for me.

In regards to X: can you manually copy files to that directory?
