Resource use in MC11
« on: January 02, 2005, 12:23:18 pm »

In my opinion, MC is getting hungry on PC resources (RAM and Processor) I do not know why is this happening, MC is the best Music Library and now Media Library I have ever found it has all the features I wanted in a media library but I am certainly disappointed with the performance of the application.

It has a lot of new features (MC 11) but it is sacrifycing the performance I hope this is because of the beta tests I really hope the MC11 final version would perform better on a laptop with Pentium 4 1.5 Gh, 256 RAM with XP Proffesional SP 2, once it did it was the best but now Windows Media Player 10 is performing better.

Thanks

Are you using any third party plug-ins or programs?

Also, 256MB of RAM may not be enough for XP to run well.

Agreed.  It seems sluggish and takes longer to load than before.

I had to increase the time between mjextman start the program and mjextman play commands in my remote control macro to start it up remotely.

I do agree with resources issue with MC.
Running on a Athlon 2.06Ghz with 1Go of ram on XP SP2
I sometimes have to wait 4>6 secondes before MC gets back to focus.
And I'm not using plugins nor heavy applications in background.
Library is +16000 files though. Could it be a reason ?

No other programs that access MC data?  Netremote, MusicLobby, AlbumView, Cover Art Finder .....?

I also agree with comment regarding sluggishness.   I have the same plug-in's  as always and have notice MC becoming more and more slugglish with every build.   I used to be able to use visualizations with my music but find that after a period of time my computer  locks up.
I keep going back to version 10.   I have  512mb of Ram on a  pen. 4  window 2000.

FWIW I have two machines, a 2.4GHz Intel w/ 512MB and an Athlon 2600+ w/ 1GB.  Both machines access a library with 7000 files which resides on the Athlon, half of which are lossless.  Launch time of MC 11 is under 5 seconds and responsiveness is immediate on both machines.  It never gets sluggish after hours of play including visualizations; my only current qualm is that the last few builds haven't always been exiting properly for me and often remain as running processes after they disappear.

256MB is likely too little RAM to use Windows respectably, let alone MC11; though I just started it up (2.5 seconds this time) and it's only taking 12MB.  Compare that to Meedio, which is currently consuming 101MB of my 1GB.  And it's just a front-end!

I have a pentium IV 3.2 w/1Gig of mem and it still takes at least 5 secs. to load, Iam not using any extra plugins.  just the bare min., i'd like to know what your secret is DougHamm.  I formatted once, b/c of a virus and installed MCv11 first and still i never noticed v11 loading in 2.5 sec. (WOW...thats pretty cool dude, again whats your secret).

Hopefully the others of us who are experiencing sluggish performance can look for an upgrade that includes speedier performance from an excellent program.

We think this may be related to the new servers that run inside MC.  We'll try to address this in tomorrow's build.

I run XP on a P3, 700Mhz with 256Mb RAM. I have about a 120Mb left after xp is done loading. Ahem, i have streamlined my PC to stop unecessary services from ever starting[/u].

When MC10 runs..im left with 100Mb. No visualizations at all (cept cover art) nor plugins.

Have not tried MC 11 yet, but i was under the impression with its new library etc..it would be even faster at worst comparable to MC 10.

Tonight's build, 11.0.164, has some changes that may improve this.

I have noticed that MC is a bit slow to load, and to begin playing selections. This is a 'comparitive' slow. Meaning it is slower than recent versions.

And, after playing minimized for awhile (more than an hour, less than 3) when I restore it it comes up really slowly. I can watch each pane paint onto the screen.

Here's what it looks like after about 2 hours playing when I restore MC.

Restored > Minimized > Restored speed can be slow because we spool the database, much of the UI, and some other components out of memory while minimized.

It's a fairly elaborate system designed to minimize resources.  The downside is that the restore speed is worse.

Maybe we could reload everything, then show.  That might make it feel faster...

That is the answer I expected from an excellent support team, please go for it

I am also a software developer and think you can do it.

Thanks
