MC11 UPNP Server CPU Usage
« on: June 03, 2005, 03:00:18 pm »

I was using the MC server PC today and had the Task Manager open while playing music from a Roku.  It seems that the CPU usage goes up to 100% when a file is requested and transcoded.  I have tried both the default MP3 VBR setting and 160 CBR setting with the same results (converting from WMA lossless).  Is it supposed to take so much CPU power?  The PC has an Athlon XP 2800+ with 512 MB RAM.

Usually encoders have a hunger for CPU cycles and they take all they can get. Until now faster encoding has been preferable. The Lame MP3 encoder used in MC is no exception.

Some applications have an option for lowering the encoding task priority. That makes the OS and other applications more responsive during the encoding. MC could have a similar option.
