Access Key [solved by ISP]

can't get library server to give an access key!
firewall is off (and even configure)
server and client under same router
media center version 15.0.172

server is running correctly ( i guess)

Is the Library Server check box checked (top left)?

Try the reset.

What happens?

yes the library server is running normally but it can't generate an access key (webplay works)

and if by reset you mean turn off the server and than on i've tried it... i've tried pc restart even and nothing works!
actually this the first time that i'm have problem with the server...

You should generate a key on the machine that is the server.  Go to Tools/Options/Media Network.

In the same section where you generate the key, there is a reset function.  There is also a test function.

If you can't make that work, there is probably a firewall running that is preventing it.

You should see something like the attached image when you click on the Access Key.  

Something on your system seems to prevent it.  Try it on another PC if you can.  Just to see it.

Try a different skin.  Try a smaller font size.

Popup blockers?! no not a thing! i've used before the server mostly on version 15.0.15x, but this is the first i'm having this problem the only variable is the anti virus and the new build!

anyway i'll keep trying!

The problem is that something is blocking MC.

Avast has a "silent firewall":

I think it's time to try uninstalling Avast and rebooting.

This was happening on my dad's computer.

It turned out to be an Avast problem.

Disabling Avast didn't fix the issue.  Avast still has some sort of man-in-the-middle when disabled that prevents outgoing port 80 traffic in this case.  Avast didn't have any indication that it was breaking / blocking another program or an explanation as to why it thought that was a good idea.  Ugh.

Uninstalling Avast (and rebooting) was the only solution.

Why the port 86?

I didn't check if the port 86 is commonly used by some application, but in general I prefer to use a port from the so called "dynamic/private" range: 49152 through 65535.

Just to be clear, the issue I saw is with Avast blocking a regular outbound HTTP request on the regular outbound port (80).  Since it wouldn't let us talk to the JRiver server, it wasn't possible to register for an Access Key.

But Alex is right that it'll probably be easier to use a port at least above 1024 for the server.  The default port range used by Media Center is 521xx.

Jumping onto this thread.  I am frustrated by this access key issue as well.  I get the same message about port 52199 when trying to get the access code.  First of all, I am behind my router anyway, so why do I need to open this port up for local network access?  Second, I have opened up that port on my router and completely disabled my firewall and still get this error message when trying to get the access code.  And no, I have nothing blocking this port.  I have unistalled/reinstalled MC - same result.  I appear to be dead in the water.  Gizmo requires this key, MC won't give me the key.

The message is this -

Pop up 1 - Registering Server

Popup 2 - Library Server could not be registered with J River Media.
              Please configure your firewall and router to allow incoming traffic on port 52199.

I never get the screen where it tells me the access number.  Again, I don't understand why this port even needs to be open for local Lan access behind the router.  The error message seems bogus.

You don't have to have an inbound hole in your firewall in order to register. 

MC does need to be able to get out in order to register your address and provide an Access Key.  It seems that something is blocking outbound requests by MC.

What Matt said above may be true for you, too.

Well it's a mystery to me.  I see nothing on my machine blocking port 52199.  I have no AV or spyware running.  The port is opened up in my router.  Windows firewall is disabled.  As far as I saw on this thread, the other guy never found a solution either.  Why is there this communication anyway?  All I want is the access code for local network access.  Gizmo seems to force me to use this access code which I can't obtain.  I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 and MC 15.0.172 and is registered.

If you have another machine, try it there.  Or even in another location just to see how it works.  At work, your sys admin might have rules set to block ports.

It's likely that something like a virus checker is doing something "helpful" for you.

You could try another port.

You could try installing Fiddler (fiddlertool.com) and watch the register request.

You might also try the same register URL (sniffed with Fiddler) in a browser.

I do have another machine and it did come back with an access key.  But both machines are sitting behind the same router.  I have another friend who gave it a try and got the access key without opening up any ports on his router.  Makes me think the router has nothing to do with it.

I'm at home.  I am the Sys Admin :)  Starting to sniff the network and see what's up.  Will keep you posted.  I appreciate the comments so far.  It does seem to be something particlular to this machine.

The Access Key system is optional. The key is stored on a JRiver server and thus the Internet connection is required.

If your local IP addresses are not constantly changing (usually they don't) you can simply use the Library Manager tool on the client for adding a library that points to your server PC's IP address and the TCP Port number that is set in the server's options. See the attached screenshot.

Ok, I hate the brute-force approach, but there were some other reasons besides this that caused me to do a clean install again of Win7.  It all works now and so sorry to whoever reads this thread that I didn't get to the root of the problem.  I was able to connect using the key on Gizmo and my Droid-X.  It is way cool, but I need to spend some time on my audio infrastructure now to take advantage of it.

dcpete are under a isp provider that block some ports?

maybe i'll install a clean copy of windows and get rid of this problem!

and about gizmo can you make it connect to an ip if it's connecting under local network without using the access key?

I don't think so in my case.  I neglected to say in my last post that I did do a capture on the network traffic on my working computer versus my not working computer (both behind the same firewall).  I did not see any messages trying to use port 52199.  I even configured the port to port 80 and got the same error.  Port 80 should get around any firewall, etc.  On the working case of testing the server, I saw HTTP get commands and responses, but again not to port 52199.  I definately think the port 52199 is a red herring.  I have another friend who tried this and didn't open up any ports on his router and the access key worked.

i've formated my pc and i still can't get the access key? can i ask you on wich port does the client (me) ask the server for the access key? is it the same case for gizmo to verify the access key even if it's under the same router?

You might test MC 16 to see if you have any better luck.

We tuned the timeouts when requesting an Access Key, and perhaps it will help in your particular scenario.

i think my isp is blocking your server when i get connected to another network i get an access key (i should try with gizmo outside the network!)
