New Size and Fonts Support
« on: March 17, 2015, 08:55:27 am »

Nice to see a lot of the HiDPI issues addressed in this update. :)
And good to see the new tag window receiving updates again.

15. Changed: Added 250% and 300% to the size menu.
Could you add 400% as well? That's the size that a lot of the retina skin assets are drawn at.

13. NEW: Added View > Load / Save View to save and load a set of tabs and splits (experimental -- may not remain).
It would be nice if we could save/restore a split view, rather than the entire window.

For example, being able to save a split view that contains all my zones opened in tabs (e.g. Split View 1) and then being able to restore that to Split 1/2/3 individually.

9. Changed: A/V sync is maintained more aggressively at the start of video playback.
Looks like I have some testing to do.

And the default is 9pt Segoe UI if you want to restore the original font.

Then set it to a smaller size in Options > Tree & View > Font.

Definitely need to do that - even the Install Wizard is Much Bigger.  ;D

1: The 12 custom user defined Playlist fonts below the Display screen (forgot what they are called... maybe Car Radio?) don't re-scale when the font size is changed. However they do re-scale correctly upon a windows re-boot.
2: The whole line below the menu near the top that has the Start/Stop/Play/Next/Previous buttons does no re-scale when the font size is changed.

What's the difference between the...
View/Size vis. Tools/Options/Tree View/Select Font?

Don't they both change the overall size?

You can size Theater View using Options > Theater View > Size.

It's now deriving the size from the size of the main app, so the two numbers work together.  This is a new change.

If I go to change the font size then it warns me about large font sizes not being optimal for jriver if I pick anything under a font size of 6. It seems that something in the font size dialog is not aware of the high dpi screen detection hences gives bogus warnings about selecting a large font size.

This is on a dell xps13 9343 (3200x1800 screen)

View → Size scales all elements of the UI. Text, buttons, icons etc.
Font size changes the text size and nothing else.

I really think that MC should let you use scaling regardless of whether the skin includes retina assets.
You're still going to have sharper text, and it lets people stick with skins that they want while making the controls large enough to use.

Did that, rebooted... same problem.

Wish I could but this site does not have direct posting of images without going through another web site which I do not have.  Sorry.

Basically what happened was when I installed MC 20.0.84 everything was very BIG; I would say about 3-4x larger then before. In fact I first thought that my display reverted to VGA mode. Upon re-setting the fonts to smaller size that resolved all issues of bigness except the line directly under the menu bar (Start/Stop/Pause/Forward/Previous & everything to the right). I believe the Size command may resolve that also but my skin does not support the Size command. So, I'm hoping Matt & his gang can come up with a fix.

I had to drop back to v80.  I use blackonBlack, and other black/darkgrey skins (Air/pearl/Silentnight/Z/PurityDark) and v84 is all out of whack visually for me.   I've never changed font size yet the installer was massive, as was the interface upon first run.    BlackonBlack skin has no size option to change in 'view/size'.  I changed the font size lower (then restarted MC) and still things are all mad visually including the timeline bar which has some odd overlay graphic on it.

Do this skins need an update now:

Black on Black, and other black/dark grey skins Air/pearl/Silentnight/Z/PurityDark

Are you sure it's not that your font size is too large? PixOS looks fine here - though I am not using a retina display.

Is it possible that this change is still scaling up the font size even when the rest of the skin is unscaled now?

The Television pages do not scale properly.

For example, If I have a high Windows DPI then the "Channel" picker (above TV Options) all but disappears entirely.

And, in some windows of Television (such as the Channel management), the OK button on the bottom is below the bottom of the screen.

I have to agree with DocLotus here: this seems to have been pushed out prematurely. .84 looked fine on my laptop but it looks awful on my HTPC, where I had increased Windows' font scaling. The advice in this thread helped a fair bit - knocking down the font size did make things look better. But now all themes except Noire look awful in Standard View, and even after decreasing Theater View's Size I can't get it to look the same as it did in .80.

I think that the impact of this change should have been better communicated to users.

(FTR I'm using the Black on Black skin on both of my PCs)

I have to agree with DocLotus here: this seems to have been pushed out prematurely. .84 looked fine on my laptop but it looks awful on my HTPC, where I had increased Windows' font scaling.
I don't know that I'd say it was premature. Scaling was implemented about a year and a half ago and has been broken on natively high DPI displays since its inception.
It took Matt buying a 4K screen recently for it to get any attention. (which speaks to larger issues with MC development, where it can be difficult to convince the team that something is necessary when none of them plan on using it, or are bothered/affected by it)

I've just had a look at this on a high DPI display now, and I agree that the recent changes clearly have issues.

I'm not sure that the current solution is the best way of handling things.
The Windows scale (e.g. 200%) is acting as a multiplier for whatever the current scale is in MC.
So if MC is at "100%" then it's actually displaying at 2× size.
If MC is at "300%" then it's actually displaying 6× - which is far too large.
The largest size that MC should be rendering is 4× - at least based on the current resolution of "retina" assets. (which would be 2× size on a 200% display)

Since it's now acting as a multiplier in the most recent change, it is now scaling skins which do not have explicit scaling support (they are supposed to be fixed at "100%" but get displayed at 2×) and that's breaking them because only some of the skin elements are being scaled up.

I'm not sure what the best solution is right now though.
I feel like Media Center should be displaying an absolute size, where "100%" is always 1× size, and ignores Windows' scale factor.
The current solution is confusing because if you have Windows at 200% and MC at "100%" it's actually being scaled up to 2× size.
If you wanted it to display at 1× size, you would have to set MC to "50%".
But if Windows is at 150% there is no "67%" setting in MC to restore 1× size, and people should not have to be calculating what the right scale factor is.

MC scales should match Windows scales in my opinion.
So if Windows is at 200%, then MC should also be at 200% to match the size of other applications, rather than "100% ×2"

But I'm not sure that it should be an automatic change.
I mean, it should be in order to remain consistent with other applications, but many people seem to want the OS at one scale, while keeping MC at another.
So it would be a nuisance if you want MC at 1× size and it automatically switched to 200% every time you launched the application.
I'm not sure whether MC supports Windows 8.1's independent monitor scaling either. I suspect it will be fixed depending on which display it is launched on.

Perhaps the best solution would be to have a new default size which is "Automatic" that respects the Windows DPI settings, and if the user overrides that with "100%" for example, then MC will be fixed at 1× scale.
That would be similar to how applications like Firefox operate where layout.css.devPixelsPerPx is set to "-1" by default which is automatic, and can then be overridden with a fixed value of "1" or "1.5" or "2" etc.

And in the meantime, I'm not sure that skins without scaling support should be displayed at anything other than 1x scale - at least not until the rendering bugs are worked out.
If at all possible, I do think that MC should support scaling "non-retina" skins, because people may switch to high DPI screens which require the larger interface size, but want to keep their old skins. Even though the skin graphics will be scaled up, text and thumbnails would at least be rendered natively and still benefit from the increased resolution.

Agree with previous post. I like windows at a set scaling and MC at a scaling I can use from the couch or otherwise. So I'd like MC to have the option of the user setting any view to the scaling that works for them eg I might want theatre view larger for couch navigation than display view when I am doing more editing like work, and so want to see more of my menus options and panes. But thei want to go back to my default windows view scale for other apps

Hi,

I have jriver on an HTPC and desktop and I share the library doing all edits at the desktop.

My question is how can I set the desktop size without affecting the size of the HTPC.

It was ok but then I had to restore the library and the desktop is now messy

I have tried all the old settings but it only works if I use the default skin i cant get Blue steel to work.

Perhaps I will have to have a different version on the desktop until Blue steel works or a skin is available that we can read from an armchair as black text on a white background is hard to view.

Thoughts please

Short answer is that you can't right now.
As of... 20.0.84 I think? Media Center is now scaling up non-retina skins using your Windows scale setting instead of leaving them fixed at 100% size.

Not very good considering the default skin is hard to read.
So what you are saying is I can't run a different version on my desktop

reverted back to 63 but still cant get the sizing right on my desktop.

Its almost like jriver has changed something in windows.

There is a size setting in the skins but like these it only works on the noire skin.

How do i get the size back to what it used to be without a complete wipe??

Set Windows scaling to 100%.

Use the Noire skin.

Can you post a screenshot of what Blue Steel looks like on your system?
Information on what size you have Windows set to would also be helpful.

OK, the issue there is the font size, as the rest of the skin is being displayed correctly.
Tools → Options → Tree & View → Advanced → Select Font
As Windows appears to be at 100% size, use Segoe UI 9pt
You should be able to enter a value if it's not available to select

I thought you were getting a prompt which only had 12pt in the selection, not an error message.
There's been a lot of changes to this stuff recently so you may have to try an earlier version.
Or if you're only using Windows at 100% size (your initial post made it sound like you had Windows set to something other than 100%) the latest version should be fine.

Mine is ONLY showing 12

I guess you meant to say it only listed, and would only allow 12 point.  ;D

I like the look of Steel Blue as well, so just loaded it on my high dpi desktop PC. It looks fine, and while I have it set to the default 9 point, it lists fonts from 8 to 72 point in the MC options. It looks like you may have lost some fonts at some time.

I am running Windows at 100% font size, and MC Standard View must default to 100% with this skin, since it isn't adjustable. I'm running version 20.0.93 on this PC.

Note that when I preview the Segoe UI Regular font in Windows 7, it only shows sizes 12 to 72 point. But that appears to be true for all Windows fonts. I guess the smaller sizes are scaled down versions, or Windows doesn't preview the smaller sizes.

Do the fonts show up in Windows?
Can you create a Word (or other word processing applications, even Wordpad in Windows) document and change some text to Segoe UI and set various font sizes?

If not I guess you need to reinstall them. You can Google how to do that.
Or you may need to "Restore default font settings". See Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Fonts\Font settings.

Segoe UI is a standard Microsoft font supplied in lots of products. It should be available to all Windows applications, and at a range font sizes. I can even set font sizes outside the standard size range, as it is a TrueType font.

If they do show up in Windows, I'm sorry but I can't help. The solution may require some JRiver magic. As Jim says, this probably isn't a MC issue. It is a problem with your Windows installation.

It seems odd that you have just the one point size for that font though, and no other sizes. Possibly you changed some font settings at some time, so that the font was effectively removed, but the 12 point size was retained because it was in use... I don't know. But restoring font settings may be a good start.

I tried the new 100 but had to drop back to 93 as the size setting  doesnt work on my desktop.

In 93 I can set size to 70% and that works. I cant use 100% as then everything is way too big.

I cant change font size at all as it still says I need 12 which is the only font available, this is not a windows problem as its the same on my HTPC

tried the new 103 using Noire I still have no fonts other than 12. This is totally unusable on my desktop.

As I use the library over the network if I try different changes on my desktop it ruins the display on my HTPC.

I need a solution please

Can I copy the library somehow??

I don't think your font problem is related to the new work.  I'm sorry, but I don't know what it is.
