Almost every time that I stop a song and then try to exit or close the program, MC 20 just freezes and I have to kill the application.

Can you describe your setup?  Version of MC?  Windows ?   and so on...

Antivirus programs often do weird things.  See my signature for more.

I Currently have the latest version MC 20.0.106, but the same has happened with previous versions.

My setup computer is CAPS 4 Pipeline running Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit.

No antivirus software running at all, since the computer is dedicated for Audio only connected to a SYNOLOGY NAS.

Then in plays to my ESOTERIC K-03x using its proprietary ASIO drivers.

The computer and program MC 20 could be running for weeks without a problem whatsoever.

But if I want to close the program MC just freezes "Hangs up" and I have to kill it "Close the task"

I have tried running MC as administrator and it also freezes when trying to close the program.

I would be really mad if MC would freeze while listening to the music, but this fortunately has never happened. Only when trying to close it, with the x or file exit.

It's like it just wants to "live forever running", it's got a life of it's own.

If you open MC, and do not play anything that requires the audio hardware (so basically nothing at all), and then close it again, does it also hang?

If not, then I'd say it is an issue releasing the audio device, probably due to something funky in the driver.

Please read through and follow the instructions under Report the Issue (you've covered most of the details we need now, except the log):
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Guide

Other things I might try (do not do these all at once, try one thing, re-test, and then revert the change if it doesn't help):
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Troubleshooting_Guide#Checking_for_Misbehaving_Audio_Devices
* Disable the ASIO Driver in MC: Tools > Options > General > Features > ASIO Driver
* Disable the WDM Driver in MC: Tools > Options > General > Features > WDM Driver

Note: When disabling the drivers, you will need to restart the computer to have the changes take effect.

I disabled it, but it still hangs. Although I like that the audio signal path is direct, having this option disabled.

* Disable the WDM Driver in MC: Tools > Options > General > Features > WDM Driver

It was already disabled so I didn't touch it

Not sure what you're talking about here, but from that comment, I strongly suspect you're confused about what it does.

This, like the WDM driver, allows you to route audio from other applications through MC. It has no impact on the audio path within MC at all.

In any case, if you're not trying to route audio from other professional applications through MC's DSP, you can leave it disabled.

No, it does not hang.

Then it is your audio device, as I suspected.

Try reinstalling the audio driver from scratch, as described in the Audio Troubleshooting Guide I linked above.  If there is a newer version of the driver available from your manufacturer, you should get it.

The device driver may just not work well in ASIO mode as well, and you may end up having to switch to WASAPI (which is no huge loss, as that's still bit-perfect, and if your driver is misbehaving, they might not have put a bunch of resources into developing it).

Update.

I installed a second partition with 2012 Server R2 core mode and all my problems are gone.

I am running MC in shell mode

No more problems, thanks everybody.

Thank you for reporting the solution.

If you're running Windows 2012 Server R2, are you, or have you ever been, also using any "optimizations" with it?

Please see this article, and remember if you encounter any issues in the future:

Understood, thank you.

That is why I kept the original partition with Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit in case any problem arises I would be able to determine if its related to the OS.

My computer is a CAPS 4 pipeline, very, very powerful and probably as good as a small server.

But, since I only run audio for maximum performance, so far, it looks like Server 2012 R2 Core mode works the best.

Aha!

I was using Windows 8.1 pro without any optimization when I was having all the problems

FYI audio optimizer only works on server 2012 version for now

although I clearly understand you don't support that setup I am just saying it resolved all the issues I was having

Yep. That's fine.  Didn't mean "you can't", but it is known to cause issues in some cases, and running Windows Server is really for experts only (especially for security reasons).

MC does certainly work well with Windows 8.1 (they use that to develop it, I believe), but something must have been wrong with the OS there.  But, in any case, I'm glad you're sorted!

It's always amusing that Windows Server Core does not include Windows.  ;D  8)
