Any hints?

Note that the above error was seen when I tried to perform a Search thru the database. The next time I started MC and tried to display the Media Library - Audio part, I saw the following error:
---
Unknown Software Exception (0xc000008e) in application at 0x014a6b8a
---
Again, any hint??
Thanks

Can you reproduce the errors every time?

If you're getting erratic errors, it may be hardware related.

Jim, yes, I can reproduce the ..0090 error. I click on Media Library, click on Audio, enter the following search text in the search box "New York", I get 4 results displayed, directly after this I get the error.

Does it crash if you search in "Media Library"?  How about in thumbnails vs. details mode?  How about with different searches?

Could you send a library backup to matt @ jriver.com (no spaces) so we could see if it happens to us?

Thanks!

Hello Matt.

Thanks for trying to help me with this annoying problem.
I have sent a very small library to your mail address, I created just to produce the error with a very small library. Please note that the error is seen on two totally different systems. One is my home PC, running XP Pro SR1, the other is my laptop, running W2K, SP4. Both are showing the same problem, with totally different hardware, and totally different libraries.

I have just installed 9.1.247, unfortunately it shows the same problem. I tried with the attached library, with different views etc. I simply enter one char into the searchbox and I get the error.

Thanks

Sorry Matt, I'm in the process of testing (when my job let's me do it). This are my findings so far:

---
Thanks a ton for helping.  I can't reproduce it though...

Some other things to think about:

* what locale are your systems (I tried German (Germany) and still didn't see the problem
- Both my systems are running the German version of Windows XP and Windows 2K, locale is also German.

* if you search in Playing Now or a smartlist does it still crash
- So far - no. Did several tests, also with big library, i.e. using the "All Music" Smartlist - no crash here (until now)...

* what if you paste in a search you know will return no results (like: asdfasdfasdf)
- yes, it crashes after the display that no records were found.

* what if you rename "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\View Info" in the registry to "View Info (old)"
not tested yet

* what if you do an uninstall / reinstall (let the uninstall clear the registry)
- I already have done this earlier without success (not with the latest version, maybe arround 9.1.246 or so)

* any thing else ?
except that the problem is also seen with 9.1.248 - no

Thanks again and looking forward to fixing this...
-Matt

Thank you Matt. I hope to have the remaining answers soon.

  • Just to be sure: searching where there aren't panes (Playlists, Playing Now) never crashes?

  • Does changing what the action window is showing make any difference?

  • Does thumbnails vs. details make any difference?

  • If we upload a test build somewhere, would you have a chance to test it today?

    Thanks!

1) Yes, without panes, no crash (so far)
2) No, tried several things, doesn't make any difference
3) No, same thing, no difference
4) Yes, in about 3 hours I could do more analysis with a test build.

Thanks again for your help!!

Can you paste these searches in and let us know which ones crash:

a
[artist]=a
[date]=a
[last played]=a
1

Thanks!

Test A (with the small library I sent you)
a                        Crash
[artist]=a           Crash
[date]=a            Crash
[last played]=a  Crash
1                        Crash

Test B (with my full library)
a                        OK
[artist]=a           Crash
[date]=a            Crash
[last played]=a  Crash
1                        OK

Thanks
- Pietro

PS. Now I also tried to change Tags using the Smartlist "All Music", and - voila - also here no more crash. So I am now pretty confident, that those crashes have to do with the panes.

OK, still can't figure it out, so let's try a diagnostic build:

http://ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/Media Jukebox.exe

Replace (after a backup) the existing "Media Jukebox.exe" in your MC directory.

Run it and type a search.  Let me know what the last few messages you see before the crash are.

Thanks again and sorry for making you jump through hoops.

- Selection update: A, B
- Set selected files: A, B, C, D
- Selection update: C, D
Enter Search string "a"
Messages:
- File view update: A, B, C

OK, getting closer.

There's an updated debug build that homes in on the bug:

http://ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/Media Jukebox.exe

(make sure it takes some time to download instead of just loading it from IE's cache)

Thanks.

( for whatever it's worth there's an MC t-shirt at the end of the tunnel :P )

It acts like it's crashing when we tell the list to update the number of items in it, which doesn't make any sense.  Here's another build to make sure we're on the right trail:

http://ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/Media Jukebox.exe

(make sure it takes some time to download instead of just loading it from IE's cache)

Updated again.

Every 10 seconds it uses a different method. (A vs. B)  See if either one of them will not crash after a search.

Sorry this is taking so many steps, but it's crashing on a simple API call. (LVM_SETITEMCOUNT)  Too strange...

9.1.249 will be out in a minute.  I fixed a few longshot float divide by zero issues. (which is what the exceptions you're seeing mean)

If that doesn't make any difference, well, let's sleep on it tonight.

Thanks again.

(p.s. is anyone else seeing this?)

Thank YOU again Matt!!

Just a short background on my busines... I once was a programmer also, almost 30 years ago... I was programming on a mainframe (NCR VRX Systems), I did OS support for our Legacy mainframe systems for about 20 years. So I know what it means to debug things like you are doing all the time... Please let me tell you, that I am very pleased with your support (and the very quick response I get from you with our problems). Now I have moved to Knowledge Management (no longer on the customer hotline with "System Down" problems etc.). But I for sure remember my long debugging times I had in the past. Again, thanks a lot for your help!!!

Hello Matt.

It seems that 9.1.249 has SOLVED THE PROBLEM!!!!  ;D

Until now I did not see the (0xc..90) crash anymore!!!

I saw (once) another bug (maybe 0xc..8e I am not sure) but the ..90 search bug seems to be fixed.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

I'll report anything else I will find, but for now, again, THANKS!!

Good night

You're just saying that because you're tired of helping :P

If not, guess one of the longshots paid off.  I don't know why the crash only happened to you but at least it's fixed.

Let us know if it acts up again.  And email me your tshirt size and address if you want an MC tshirt :)

No, it really seems to be fixed. I have loaded my big library again, and - everything worked so far.

For sure I will report any problem I find in the future (because that's what I understand of being a "Beta" tester - to help YOU as the developer, finding any potential bugs - so that others dont run into it.)

Thanks again (and I will mail my t-shirt size, I would really like to have one...).

Good night, and I thing we will "talk" in the future.
