POLL: JRiver's TV Support
« on: September 28, 2015, 10:15:27 am »

We're seeing a lot of new business from people who are looking for a Windows Media Center replacement.  I'd like to get a better sense of what percent of our user community has used JRiver Media Center television features.

Thanks for your help.

Early snapshot:

Yes  35%
Maybe 21%
No 39%

I'm surprised that it's 35%.  That's good.  I would have guessed it was a smaller segment of our customer base.

Maybe the 10 people that use TV came to the forum today? :)

There is that, yes.  I would expect the per cent who use it to go down as the total number of voters goes up.

I'm not sure if this poll will be biased because it is in the MC21 forum and lots of TV people go straight to the TV forum, or if posting a thread in the TV forum pointing to this poll would bias the result.

But couldn't you just do a count of how many people post in the TV forum, and how often, then make an estimate of how many of those are actually TV users? I reckon anyone who has posted in there multiple times, over a period longer than three months, is definitely a TV user.

I would use it if it worked. To secure a channel, admitted that the hooks, takes forever. Additionally, Theater View mode, I can only see the channels for which there is a tv guide

This would under count. I'm a heavy TV user (one of the key reasons I selected MC -- MC21 in particular) and have zero posts to the TV forum. Oddly, I'm not even 100% sure if I've visited it.

One of the strengths of Windows MC was the simplicity of TV (setup, guide, series subscriptions, etc.). While not quite as clean, JRiver MC is very good on this front and much better on other fronts.

I made a conscious decision to dump WMC / MCE a few years ago and take up MC for a whole of media approach for video, audio and TV.

Coming from Oz, it was harder than a US experience because of the EPG setup hurdles that needed to be jumped over.

I can relate to comments from those migrating from WMC. There was a bit of a learning curve to change horses. Good things come to those who make the effort and if you support the other members of your household, you can convert that to a high WAF.

Wouldn't go back. Just want to see the TV side of MC improve, which it has been steadily with time...   ;)

I voted no - partly because I just don't watch broadcast television much anymore, and partly because I also had some issues when I tried to set it up here in Australia... that was a while ago though!

I use MC's video support every day, but I never use the TV support.  I don't like using more than one source for TV and so remain tied to my Sky satellite box.   I'm a luddite I guess, in this multi-source age.

Still 34.8% Yes, plus another 13.6% would if improved.

A real potential for 48.4% of users to use the TV functionality.

I really wanted to switch a while back, but need CableCard support. Just about everything is flagged copy-once here. I found a good deal on TiVo and have been mostly happy.

Pretty much 100% OTA TV PVR use here, on two PCs. We watch blurays on one once in a while. Very occasional music library use.

I use TV OTA watching and recording everyday, been working very good after replacing my boot hard drive that died on Sunday. It was working fine before my hard drive failed but fresh install of windows sure makes a difference. For some reason play back of TV, BluRay and MKV files seems to be somewhat better quality with the same drivers.

I have a homerun dual network, and a onair GT usb tuner, no problems at all.

For me TV support is the number 1 use for me and why I purchased  JRiver. Been using since  ver 17 I think.

One prime reason I joined was for FTA TV and the work with Yaobing getting the initial DVB-T support was fantastic (Australia).  We now use our Cable box for FTA TV (it rebroadcasts most channels).  I don't use it all that much any more but would say the areas for improvement would be:
1) Native OTA EPG EIT & MHEG5 support
2) Ability to watch Live TV on Remotes (note: EOS does this now)

I stayed for other reasons.

Until either it supports encrypted cable, or I switch to OTA only, that feature is not useful for me. Already too many choices for the wife to make but they are clearly delineated:
WMC Extender (XBox 360) = TV
HTPC = our content
AppleTV = everything else (fingers crossed for a WMC app with the new AppleTV so I can remove the HTPC downstairs).

If I broke TV out to two different devices I would never hear the end of it.

MCE + 4 xboxes = TV
JRiver = Whole house audio
Chromecast for on demand stuff I can't get with Windows media center (hbo, showtime, etc.)

I have used TV in MC for the past 3 versions. MC 21 is by far the best. I have a HD Home Run dual tuner sat on the network and MC plays very nicely with it. The EPG now works again :)

I have a humax PVR which I have set to series record the F1 Grand Prix series. If the time difference is more than 12 hours (UK then a Singapore GP) the recording fails. MC 21 however always records it :) I have had to revert to MC to watch them a few times. I use the Humax as it's HD and the Homerun is not but saying that the recorded quality is excellent.

MCE + 4 xboxes = TV

I think this hits on one of the drawbacks of using MC for TV currently - how to distribute around the house.  Right now MC does not have native apps on any of the popular set top boxes and most people don't want to hook up video capable PC's to all of their displays for both cost and aesthetic reasons.

Voted for the maybe if improved. Would love to use MC more on our HTPC, but just always found the interface lacking 'flair' in the details for things like metadata of Movies for example.  I don't watch Live TV hardly at all so improvements in that arena means nothing to me but would be important for others I'd guess. For me it's all about the movies! MC has me for the music and photo tag/organization management, smartlist/playlist building smarts and my "daily driver" for listing to my media at my desk though. Nothing comes close in those depts.  ;)

I would if it supported decrypting DVB-C CI+ channels.
Same here, in fact although happy about MC in general, the lack of CI encryption and no solution in sight makes it a no-go for TV (but that's only for Europe of course) forces me to check other options.
