MC 21 crashes constantly
« on: November 19, 2015, 03:26:12 am »

I am running MC21 on a Windows 10 computer. There is nothing on the computer except JRiver and Chrome. MC21 is constantly crashing. I have to restart my computer after each crash. I have read the forums and they make no sense. I am running the most recent version of MC21. This has happened on two different computers, one of which is brand new.

What do I need to do to prevent this from happening?

I think it is pathetic you don't have phone support to help non-experts figure out how to use your product. Needless to say I am very frustrated because I can't figure out how to fix this problem.

I apologize for the tone of my post.  It's just frustrating.  I've been trying for weeks to get the program to work, to no avail.  I have deleted and reinstalled the program after making a backup of my library and nothing seems to work.  I don't understand the forum responses so I am truly up a creek.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's very nice of you to apologize.  It's a very mature thing to be able to do.  Thanks.

If you're patient and answer questions, we can probably find the cause.

What version are you running?

The latest build is posted at the top of this board.  It's worth trying.

Where does it crash?  What are you doing?

Any DLNA devices on your network?  Sony TV's have been a factor in similar problems and we're working on the fix.  Turn off Media Network as a test.

MC has a logging feature. It's at Help>Logging.
When you have a problem it is sometimes useful to attach a Log to you post.

Since the Log can get very big on its own, it is best to go to the Log feature (make sure it is turned on) and periodically reset the log (clear it out), then when you have a crash restart MC and immediately create a Log.

Thank you for the help.

I am using the most recent version.

I use MC21 only for music.

I do have a new Sony TV. I have turned off DLNA.  If this works (I hope so!) is there anyway to just exclude the Sony TV?  I use JRemote to control MC21 and would like to continue doing so.

Thank you, again, for your help.

If you could do what CountryBumkin suggested and enable logging, that would be helpful. This sounds like it could be related to another issue, but without the log, I can't tell for sure. If you're not sure how to use logging, you can find out here:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

Once Media Center crashes get the log and attach it to a post here. If the log is too big to post on the forum, e-mail it to me. I'm brad at jriver dot com.

JimH suggests the full version would be helpful.  The full version of the log?

Jim is asking for the whole version number of MC that you are running.  For example, 21.0.19 .  It's under Help > About media center .

But the log which captures the crash would be SUPER useful.  That would probably tell the entire story.

Attached please find the log of tonight's use of Media Center.  The computer froze after the crash.  I restarted the computer and then the program and then generated the attached log.

I am using version 21.0.23

I appreciate your help and direction very much.

Media Center crashed again after I sent the last post, even though DLNA was disabled.  Attached is the log from tonight which contains the record of the most recent crash.

It looks like it might be related to another issue we're working on at the moment. If you could, there is one other thing you could try as a test. Disabling DLNA isn't always enough in some cases. It looks like you have a few networked devices. If you'd be willing to try some testing, you could disconnect each device, one at a time, from the network to see if that resolves the issue. I would start with the Sony TV first. Give it some time and see if Media Center stops crashing. If not, go ahead and reconnect the device and try a different device. The second device you might want to try is whatever device has the 192.168.1.21 address (It looks like it might be a printer). Keep in mind that I am only suggesting this as a test, not a solution.

I took the Sony TV off line.  Media Center still crashed.  I'll try the printers next.  Those are the only other things on the network

Here is the log.

I don't know if it matters, but I haven't mentioned that the computer running Media Center is connected by a cable to the DAC. I am not running MC on my home network.

Did you turn off auto import?

No, I haven't tried that.  I'll let you know if it makes a difference.

I turned off auto import and MC didn't crash today. Does that help with a fix?

That means you have at least one file that is causing problems.  You could try modifying your auto import settings.  Or you could try importing manually, one directory at a time.

If you find a file that is causing a problem, we would like to see it.

TIFF files were a problem for a few builds.

How should I modify the auto import settings to make this possibly work better?

What should I look for to identify a file that is causing a problem?

Thank you for your help. It looks like the program is working for the most part.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear.  What should I do to auto import settings to make this problem go away?  I currently have it set to auto import from iTunes.  I did not see that I had any other options but to set where MC scanned for new music.  Should I have it scan in some other way to get iTunes imports?

You can edit the locations you import to limit the file types you import.  PSD and TIFF have been problems.

We would like to see any file that causes a problem.

There may be an easier way - but this I what I would do (until someone comes along with a better idea).

In Standard View go to "Drives & Devices" then expand "Explorer" and find the drive/folder where your iTune files are located. Once you have that pick one iTune folder/album or just select a couple of files, and then Right Click and select "import into Library".

By doing one folder, album, or a couple of individual files at a time you would be able to narrow down where the "bad file" is located. If MC crashes/freezes on the first file import attempt - restart MC and try a different file, if it crashes again, then something deeper is wrong.

Do I need to delete the files from MC before I essentially "reimport" them?
