These are the problems. W7 MC20 (I had the same problems with MC 21)
When I launch MC I do not see the app window nor is it shown in the W7 taskbar. If I run MC again. The window miraculously appears instantly.
When I make a change to the media server settings, audio settings and misc other settings, MC crashes. It just goes unresponsive.
I cannot control the volume of my Pioneer N50 in DMR mode. I ran an analysis of the features of the N50 and it apparently supports set volume.
I would like to set DSP for the Pioneer. When I do that I get a message to say playback stopped or doesn't support processing.
I have gapless selected and cross fade, neither of which happen. I have the Player linked to the N50.
When I start a track, i get a splattering of sound and then nothing for several seconds. Then it comes to life.
When I first launch MC and then start a track, it does not play on the N50. If I stop and start the track, it does and continues to behave thereafter.
I must say, having spent about 3 hours pouring over the support forum and playing with settings, I must have had about 40 crashes.
I have many apps on my Windows machine and I have no problems with reliability on any of those apps.

These are probably antivirus problems.  There is a thread here on similar problems.  Start at the "Weird Problems" link in my signature and read carefully.

Thanks for the swift response Jim.
I checked the Weird Problems and couldn't find anything that helped.
I found can avoid crashes by stopping music play whilst changing settings.
I think it may be something to do with the DLNA device too. Am experimenting and will report back.

One additional question plse. I use JR Remote on iPad and want that to control the music selection on my DLNA player, I assume in DMR mode. What is the best way of achieving this please?

Certainly you should follow JimH's suggestion about anti-virus topics. And also check for firewall issues too.

You mentioned problems with MC and you say that you had the same problems with MC21. This makes me think that you may have two version instances of MC running at the same time. And that they are interfering with each other. This certainly would explain the connectivity issues (both servers trying to use the same IP address and port), freezing (both instances trying to access the same files), and other problems (the renderer getting commands from one or other server and sending state messages to the other one), etc. etc. Therefore my suggestion is to completely uninstall both versions of MC from your machine, reboot the machine, and then do a complete clean install of just one version (MC21).

OK I have a new realisation!
I had thought i needed to link the Player and N50 but in fact, whichever zone is selected in MC, the iPad remote follows that.
My next quest is how I get the MC iPad remote volume to control volume on my N50.
Any ideas?

@Andrew, I had installed MC20 just in case MC21 was unstable. I did a complete uninstall and reinstall, having backed up and restored the library. I might just reinstall MC21 making sure there are no servers still running.

Antivirus Problems

Are you running antivirus software?  What is it?

My antivirus software is disabled as is my firewall. I am still experiencing occasional hangs/crashes. If i stop playing music whilst changing settings, I reduce the crashes by about 90%. I have yet to uninstall the antivirus software as I am trying to work out how to control volume. If I can't do that, then my rationale is void and I'll go back to the drawing board. Can you help here please Jim?

I just spoke to Pioneer and they say the N50 cannot control volume. OK, that may be true but can MC control the volume? And despite the assertion from Pioneer I ran Whitebear's analysis app which showed this for the N50, note RC:set volume appears to be supported:

Indeed. I certainly suggest not to try linking zones until you have got things set up and working individually.

Check Options ¦ Audio ¦ Volume ¦ Volume Mode ¦ Disabled Volume (??)

Also, as far as I recall it, if you were to link the N50 Receiver to Player, and you Disabled Volume on the Player, then that would suppress the sending of volume control commands to the receiver as well.

EDIT: my last message crossed with yours, so below are some additional comments:

- Even if a renderer supports receiving the UPnP volume commands, it does not guarantee that the device will actually do anything with them
- The DMRA report shows that the renderer failed the Event subscription; therefore in MC you need to right click on the renderer and select Disable Events (for broken renderers)..

Jim, I just checked the volume setting. It was set to Application. I set it to disabled to test any difference. MC crashed.
Anyway, no matter what I do with the volume mode, i cannot affect the N50 signal volume.
I can set the DSP equaliser for the N50 and hear the frequency response change but the level/gain control does not appear to have any effect.
Is there a way of doing the volume on the server? Effectively parsing the encoded signal, like I guess you do with leveling but in this case variable?

If you PC has an HDMI output, you could try connecting to your receiver via an HDMI cable instead of trying (failing) to do it via UPnP.

Just an idea...
