Audio stutter in MC 20 & MC 21 after installing Windows 10
« on: December 22, 2015, 07:35:22 pm »

Installed Windows 10 and reinstalled MC 21 as per direction. Music now hangs or stutters during playback regardless of file type or location in system.
Set buffers (both) to maximum no improvement. Reinstalled DAC driver, no improvement. Used all drivers ASIO, WASAPI, and SPDIF no improve.
Downloaded MC 21 to second computer running Win 7, same anti-virus program, plugged into same system as first device, and had flawless playback.
Any help would be appreciated.

Uninstall your antivirus (as a test).

How powerful is this machine?  Please run JRiver's benchmark.  Help > benchmark > run benchmark

What kinds of files are you trying to play?

Could not find benchmarking link.
Computer is getting just a little long in tooth; Pentium Dual-core 2.10 GHz, 3 GB, 64 bit operating system.
MC 21 did run on this machine prior to the installation of Win 10. Also ran MC 18, 19, and 20.
"Stutters" or "Hangs" on all file types & sizes: ape, M4a, flac. Bitrates 128 thru 3000. File location does make any difference; device, remote hd, or NAS.
Ideas?

For the benchmark:

Go to the Help menu.  Click on Benchmark... Click Run Benchmark.  Then paste in your benchmark score here.

I'm pretty sure that a JMark of 1500-ish is fine for playback of almost all formats, until you get to very high resolution and/or DSD.

Unless you're doing a bunch of DSP processing?  But you didn't mention that so...

Hmm.  I'm not sure what to suggest from here.  Hopefully one of the more windows expert guys will step in to help.

I'm also getting this, as are a lot of people with Windows 10 in general (not just with MC).

Have you tried disabling audio enhancements?

I'd check and see if the latest drivers for your DACs/sound cards is installed. Windows 10 changed things in regards to sound (and still no native USB audio class 2.0 support!) and some older drivers may be borked.

I had similar problems with MC 21 in win 7 tho

I also had static/vinyl like surface noise on 24 bit and above files

as well as stuttering

I found this resolved things

I changed out put bitrates to no changes up to 352,800HZ....all over 352,800Hz to output as 352,800Hz..also chose wasapi

Smooth since then , on those issues

Where would i find audio enhancements? Audio in control panel seems rather limited.

Checked drivers almost first thing, latest version. Thanks for the thought.

OT, but it looks like MS will never come to reality.

tjc, if you didn't do a "fresh" update I would. Install the original Win 7 or whatever, activate it, and then Win 10 upgrade, and you won't need an antivirus program. I haven't experienced any of that with Win 10, but I did a clean install and my W10 desktop is newer (Bench Mark 3196), and I am not using a high end DAC, just on board spdif. As others mentioned, find out what your DAC natively supports and mimic that in MC (as in "no change" for those bitrates) and do not play from memory.

Win 10 is a little flaky in some areas as we all know. If needed keep using Win 7 on that "little long in tooth" machine for now. Does NAD have related forums?

Thanks all for all the input; much appreciated. Have settled on a reasonable solution.

imugli, found enhancements they had not been activated.

Zhillsguy, Went back to Win 7 but did not take them up on the offer of a newer update as it had only been on my device for a couple weeks and the listed corrections didn't sound encouraging. All files play well from all storage locations with the Win 7. I'm okay with that, as this device will be a hi-fi unit only in a few weeks. NAD did have a forum but not shed any light.

Notes: If Win 10 has been installed less than 30 days it is a painless transition back to your former operating system, (7 or 8).
Installed MC21 on another newer device that had recently been converted to Win 10 and it performed as designed. Newer device showed a benchmark of 2177.
Ran another bm test on this device after re installation of Win 7 and came up with 1598.
After the reinstall of Win 7 you're not prompted to reinstall MC 21 as after the Win 10 install. This will need to be done anyway as the program will have a number of glitches after the return to Win 7.
