Cannot access remote library
« on: January 14, 2016, 09:14:04 am »

Hi there
I am trying to access my remote library with a JRiver client located in my office. The JRiver server runs on a PC @home

Reding https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Network_Access which states "The port you use must be accessible (not blocked by a firewall) from outside your network, and you must be using the outside address of your network." WHich kind of port should I open in my router: UPD, TCP or what? Please improve the JRiver wiki if needed

thanks

All routers being different, basically its just in port forwarding part of the menu for the router. I have only done this on a couple of brands (Net Gear is the one I'm on now) and it just asks for a range of ports and an IP address, not the kind of port?. It on the firewall of your AV that you want to open (or exclude from the FW) the port -- if there is a choice exclude all for the default 52199 if you haven't changed that. It might say allow all or trusted or home office too maybe.

On the office side that's different of course -- you'd be getting in from the external fixed IP via the 52199 port and forwarded to the local IP (fixed normally through DHCP of the router if not Windows - most modern routers can assign a static IP now via the DHCP menu or at least give it a long term lease associated to a MAC address -- it works for me at least). The problem lots of people have is that their office has elaborate firewalls, and/or proxy access to internet -- but that's beyond the scope of most common mortals and best ask the IT department.

Did you read the article linked in the footnote to the WIKI one ? In it there a few links to check to see if you can connect externally before you actually leave your house. http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=60252.0

thanks much arindelle
I do not have a netgear modem router but I had one. all routers can forward port for UDP ot TCP packets (it is part of the internet protocol: UDP is faster but less reliable)
I am surprised that the wiki does not specify this
I will check both modes.
I changed the port number for security reasons but the router and the the JRiver server are consistent

ciao

It's a fairly safe assumption that it's going to be TCP.  I'll bet you a beer.  :)

So just forward 52199 from your outside (internet facing) address to your MC server inside.  That should do it.  As Ariendelle indicated, there's a tool built in to MC to allow you to test this outside connection.  I think it tells a server at JRiver to test it from the Internet.  You can find it at:

Tools > Options > Media Network > Access Key > Test connection to this server

Good luck.

Brian.

for remote (out of the home LAN access should I use the URL or the access code or it is the same?
It is http or https?
I am using a port different from the default but router NAT rule is consistent with this

eg. URL
https://3.23.245.246:8100
http://3.23.245.246:8100
3.23.245.246:8100

which one is correct? for me URL includes http or https ...

I should be asked for a username if I configured the server for username and passwd, right?

thanks again
