Windows XP - unable to install license and uninstall too..
« on: January 21, 2016, 10:23:32 pm »

Hello,
Successfully installed MC21 on several Windows 7 machines.
When it comes to Windows XP, however, MC21 installs but I am unable to install the license.

I get 4 messages:

-- Error opening file: C:\path_to_the_file\Media Center21***.mjr
-- License for Media Center was successfully installed
-- Error opening file: C:\path_to_the_file\Media Center21***.mjr
-- License for Media Center was successfully installed

The license doesn't get installed.

Also I am unable to UNINSTALL MC21. When I click on Uninstall button in Control Center or run JRMediauninstall.exe, nothing happens.

I understand that XP is not officially supported but is there a way to make it function on XP?
I use XP on my HTPC and want to keep it this way... (tried to migrate to 7 but had problems with Girder and the darn VFD panel doesn't work under the 7!!

Thanks!
Max

Antivirus?

As far as I know, MC still works on XP.

Jim,
Yes, it works but the license file wouldn't install.
Uninstall doesn't work either.
I just installed MC21 on another instance of XP (VMware) - same behavior!

MC20 didn't do this...
I do not have an antivirus running...

Tried with 21.0.34 and 21.0.37

thanks!

Is it OK to use MC20 client connecting to MC21 library server?

It might work.  It's not recommended.

Then, something is not right between XP and MC21... It's reproducible.
I have 10 days of trial left and cannot install the license.

Did you try using your Registration Code to restore?

MC21 works fine in XP. I just installed the licence using the registration code rather than messing around with licence files or w/e. I was also able to uninstall it just fine.

MC20 connecting to a MC21 library works fine for me anyway, streaming video and audio files and never had an issue (though I only do that because I'm too lazy to upgrade the MC install on that specific machine).

If you enter the Registration Code in MC, the license should be installed automatically.  The Install Key (mjr file) isn't needed.  Check the license status in MC's Help menu.

It's possible the older version is trying to install the license because it has the mjr file type registered.  Normally the last program run owns the file type.

When I enter the Registration Code, MC creates a temporary mjr file which also fails to work.

I did a clean install in VMware with no previous MC installations - same behavior..
Maybe I should try an older build of MC21...

Yeah... I'll probably revert back to MC20 on my HTPC - it was working fine with MC21 server.

It's possible the older version is trying to install the license because it has the mjr file type registered.  Normally the last program run owns the file type.

When I enter the Registration Code, MC creates a temporary mjr file which also fails to work.

This can happen if:

* You haven't run the current copy of MC at least once and given it the chance to register itself on the system, just before you try to apply the license. Whichever copy (so MC20 vs 21 vs 19) of MC that was last run is the one that "owns" the MJR files, and also the one that will work through the uninstaller and with Shell Integration.

* You have some kind of security software on the system which prevents it from registering its DLLs or taking ownership of the MJR file extension.

In any case, this is easily solved. You have the MJR file (probably a bunch of them). Take whichever is the most recent, and:

0. Make sure you've launched MC21 at least once, and haven't run any older version since then. Also, make sure MC20 (or an older version) isn't simultaneously running while you do this, perhaps in the System Tray in Library Server mode. The easiest thing is to run MC21 and leave it there running while you do the rest.
1. Select the MJR file in Windows Explorer somewhere (like on your desktop) and right-click.
2. Choose Open With in the menu that comes up and then choose Choose Program (or Other or whatever, they keep renaming that choice, to let you browse for a program).
3. In the program browser that appears, navigate here:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 21
4. Choose the PackageInstaller.exe application in that folder.
5. Check the box to always open with this application in the future.
6. Done. Click Okay and it'll open and register the copy of MC.

If this doesn't work, then you have something blocking PackageInstaller's ability to do its job, probably some kind of Registry "protection" or cleaning tool.

Yeah... I'll probably revert back to MC20 on my HTPC - it was working fine with MC21 server.

MC20 currently works just fine with a MC21 server. In fact, MC19 also works fine as a client. However, this is not guaranteed to remain the case, and you may have sync issues in some cases. There were, for example, sync-related bugs fixed in recent builds, and you'll only get the benefit of these fixes if you are running a newer copy of MC21 as both the server and the client.

Using out-of-sync major versions of MC together may work, but is an unsupported configuration. So, if you do this and you have trouble, there won't be much we can do to help.

The registration should work. It would be best to figure out why it isn't in your case.

Hi Glynor,
Thanks for your input!
I doesn't help me though.. Since I did a clean install with no previous MC installs.
All file associations are fine. PackageInstaller.exe tries to run the MJR file but fails.

Anyway, I solved the problem by installing an older version of MC21 (09) and it registered just fine!

Thanks!

Problem solved!
Installed an older version of MC21 (21.00.09) and it registered just fine!
So, I guess, it's a bug introduced somewhere in between version 09 and 34.
Two bugs, since uninstaller doesn't work either...

Thanks everyone!

And if you install the latest version now that it's been installed, does it work?  Or are you just dead in the water with new builds?

No, installed 21.00.39 over 09 and the registration stayed. So, all is fine!
Uninstall still doesn't work (not that I need it now : )

That's interesting. Sounds like something indeed broke on XP.

I'm testing on a bottle today.

We install no problem, but then installing a license fails.

It's really strange how it's tanking, but I have a work-around I think.  I asked the team to make sure it's reasonable, but we'll hope that solves it!
