Odd Issue - no icons in taskbar
« on: January 31, 2016, 07:22:11 pm »

I'm not sure what to call it but it only happens when I'm running jriver.  I'm on win 10 and it happens sporadically.  I'll leave the PC running for a few days, come back and all the icons are gone in the taskbar (date, network, volume etc) and nothing will run.  If I hover over jriver I can see the window but when I click it nothing happens.  Nothing works, the search is gone, the start button is gone, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't pull up anything.  I have to do a hard reboot.  I thought it may be an update that windows installed but I did a system restore prior to that and also turned off windows update.  It was good for a longer period of time but when I went back today it happened again.

Admittedly, I've basically always had jriver running since I've had the PC so i'll try it for a bit without it running but I thought I'd throw it to the forum to see if they've had similar issues.  I've been online and seen an issues with missing icons in the taskbar but I haven't found anything that says it shuts down the entire PC.  Lots of win 10 bugs so who know.

Thanks.

I have this issue on Windows 8.1. I also had it with WMC on this same OS. I was hoping my eventual upgrade to Win10 would have solved but your post does not give me much confidence in that. Yes, help with this annoyance would be greatly appreciated. I can only guess that it is more OS related, and possibly related to running something like this full screen for prolonged periods of time. Perhaps DirectX has something to do with it?

Nvidia?

This does sound like a GPU driver going sideways. Or explorer.exe crashing and burning...

I don't think it is neither JRiver nor Nvidia.

On my Windows 10 I have seen the same, and that particular PC uses an ATI gfx-card and does not have JRiver installed :-)

One of my colleagues PC's does it permanently, he has more or less given up, and he does not use JRiver.

My solution was to run "sfc /scannow" from a commandprompt.

check to see if it s win explorer acting up ... does this all too often in Win10

to test go right click on task bar =>task manager find windows explorer and restart (do not stop the process!) instead of rebooting. happeing on Win8, thats something else again.

Good advice. Will try tonight. I am sure to find my instance in this wonky state. I'll report back.

I'm pretty sure the issue can be caused by a number of different faults in Win10.

Neither mine nor my colleagues computer was "fixable" by restarting explorer.exe
