Unable to play m4a stream
« on: March 05, 2016, 08:53:01 am »

I noticed today that the linux version seems unable to play some mp4a internet radio streams.

An example is http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_high/ak/bbc_radio_one.m3u8

Windows MC plays it without issues
VLC or Amarok on the same linux machine also plays it

Is there some config I'm missing or is this something that jrmc on linux just doesn't support?

Does internet radio work at all on JRiver for Linux?  My understanding was there was no web support of any kind at this point.

Interesting point. It hadn't occurred to me to think that the (windows) server would be streaming this to the (linux) client.

If this is what is happening then is this the same problem as http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=102786.0 ?

is there a page somewhere that lists what is and isn't actually supported on linux?

Not that I'm aware of; there's one for Mac, and with one or two notable exceptions (e.g. ripping and any kind of web browsing) they're pretty similar.

Part of the problem is that JRiver has so many, many functions that the only way to find out if it's supported on Linux is to test it on windows and then on Linux  :-\

There isn't web support but there is an internet layer that works for things like streaming audio.
There is probably something specific about that stream that's not handled by the curl code in MC.
I'll give it a look...

It's a playlist within a playlist that doesn't lead to a final url (I get some kind of auth rejected).

It works on jriver windows, the auth issue might be because it is a BBC radio stream and you are outside the UK

MC needs to be able to download ffmpeg plugins to play some kinds of m4a.
Since your machine has an internet connection (or how would you play the stream?) it should just automagically download the plugin.

non-debian distro?
ssl client certificate store incompatible??

It is exactly the same as the other box I provided logs for, i.e. my stock Linux setup which is Debian testing (with KDE as you require a desktop). The only difference is this is in a VM but it is not obvious why this would be an issue (famous last words).

What can I check to debug further?

Which plugin is it? I could install that manually to workaround for now?

You can't manually install it but you could try deleting the plugin directory and see if it loads the next time you try to play the stream (or perhaps play a local m4a file first?)

~/.jriver/Media Center 21/plugins/linux_avcodec/

You could also try ldd on the files in there to see if your OS is missing something...

in fact there isn't even a plugins directory at all

I rsync'ed the dir over from my other box and ldd'ed each of the so's in there, everything is linked and now the stream works fine. I can't see any issues with the perms in that dir so I have no idea what the problem was.

It won't create the directory until the plugin is downloaded.
It's possible you needed to play a local m4a first. A bug perhaps...
