Debian 8.3 - No sound
« on: March 14, 2016, 10:34:11 pm »

Hello,

I just bought an Intel NUC6i3SYH (Audio is Realtek ALC) and I installed Debian 8.3 on it. No issue. Then I installed MC 21.0.54 for Debian (Jessie). I also entered the key file to unlock the software.

Now the NUC has a small input jack for Audio. I start MC and plug my headphone and I have no sound. I am able to see on the audio path the input and output steaming format but I have no sound.

Any idea what can be wrong? I saw on forum some stuff about pulseaudio that can maybe interfere with the audio player.  I have MC on Windows 10 and everything is fine.

Best Regards

Chris

In Audio settings for MC, can you select a device?

Look in the audio settings as Jim suggested. Select a front: device.
Check MC's mixer settings, try system and internal.

If you still can't get sound bring up the system mixer and check the mute switches and various volume controls.

Hello,

Thank you for fast response.

In Audio Device, if I select "pulse(Alsa)", I can play a song but I have no sound. If I select "sysdefault: CARD=PCH(Alsa), I have the "Playback Problem, Something went wrong..."

I am new in Debian (Linux), not too sure what you mean by:
"If you still can't get sound bring up the system mixer and check the mute switches and various volume controls."

Where is this system mixer?

In the menu: All Setting / Sound,
I can see my headphone but even the "Test Speakers" do not work.

Is there any package that I should install? Where is this system mixer?

Still searching...

Best Regards

Hello Again,

One last thing, my USB DAC works... but not the HDMI and the headphone output.  I guess there is some bug in Linux...  If you have some suggestion let me know.

Okay, Last post for this one.

MC control the DAC. I can see the Sampling rate changing on the screen of my display base on the music. I though this was working but when I install my DAC on my System : NO SOUND!

There is a hidden mute button that I cannot find. I abandon, I will buy a Windows license. Sad because the Debian Environment is very nice.

Conclusion Dibian 8.3 is not fully functional with Intel NUC6i3SYH.

You probably just need to choose the audio device in MC.  They have odd names on Linux.  There are other posts here about this.

Open a Terminal and copy/paste the following command in...

Code: [Select]
'/usr/lib/jriver/Media Center 21/alsacap'
And post the output here. We'll then go from there. Also a screenshot of your audio devices in the dropdown menu in MC (Tools > Options > Audio) like this would help;

Try hw:CARD=x20,DEV=0 [ALSA] or front:CARD=x20,DEV=0 [ALSA] and see if either work.

If those fail, then try each one-by-one and see if any of them work. I'm pretty sure the x20 in the list is the DAC.

As for the location of the sound mixer in Debian just click on Activities on the top left corner, click the show applications button (the 9 dots button on the bottom left) and find Settings. Open Settings then click Sound and there's the mixer. Make sure the USB DAC is the one selected/highlighted as the output. You can also click on Test Speakers to, well, test the speakers.

Here's a screenshot example of Debian running in a virtual machine (and thus only one output available).

It's set on the digital S/PDIF output in the third picture. Is this correct? Have you tried switching to the second analog output?

Hey Thank you for your help. Very appreciate.

Yes, I tried both output. I tried many Audio Device.  Always no sounds. Something very strange...

There is a lot af package to install in Linux. Should I try Pulseaudio (Pavuccontrol)?

I am not too sure this package is on my machine...

Best Regards

You can try it, but using Pulse means output is limited to 48 kHz.

Hello,

This is definitively not what I want... This is what I had with my Squeezebox. This is really a funny bug because I can see my DAC following the bit rate of the song but everything is quiet. Headphine, DAC, HDMI...

I did some test with the Raspberry PI and I have been able to make it work with the USB. It even been able to drive my McIntosh C50 USB DAC with no issue. I drop this setup, because I found the setup too slow...

Actually, with this new setup, if I plug the USB DAC of my McIntosh C50, your software Freeze... With my Laptop under Windows 10, everything works very well...

I can buy a cheap Windows 7 License,  I will see if this NUC box can work with this other OS. Thank you for your help.

Best Regards

Chris
