freeze while playing CD requires reboot
« on: March 19, 2016, 01:23:15 pm »

MC 21 started going haywire about a week ago while playing a CD on my external drive.  Tunes will play for a time but at some point the song will freeze or the program will become unresponsive when I try to change tracks. It tries to buffer the track and then stops, then appears to scan through the remaining tracks on the cd like it can't read them and then MC21 becomes unresponsive. I close it but it's still running on the CPU, if I try to launch the program I get a message that says "Media Center 21 is running, but there may be a problem"  then some listed possible problems about two accounts, media server in the startup menu, or my favorite "the program is not responding for an unknown reason".

After a reboot of the CPU it seems to work ok again for a little bit of time but then repeats the behavior.

Please try build 58 from a thread at the top of this board.

Antivirus software can cause some strange problems.

Did anything else change around the time the problem began?

I already installed build 58 hoping that would work.

I run Webroot antivirus and firewall

I did change out external disc drives last week

thanks

The other drive bricked so I couldn't.

I have a internal BD drive I'm playing a CD on right now after the last reboot. I'll see how that goes.  I hope it's that simple.

If I decide to suspect the Webroot, it needs to be totally uninstalled correct?  I tried shutting everything on it down but that didn't have any impact on the behavior.

Thanks for the quick replies

That sounds like a disk stall. Possibly a drive is going bad, but more likely you have a bad or loose cable.

Yes, to really test any possible problem caused by security software, the only accurate way to test is to uninstall, reboot, and re-test.

If there is no change, then you can reinstall it and move onto the next possibility.
If it changes, though, then you have your culprit.

Ok, seems it's the external BD drive! I played about 10 different discs and ripped a few songs with the internal drive and things seem to be just fine.  Thanks for making me look at the obvious before moving on to all the other options! I guess I'll have to go get a new external drive.  Kind of sucks cause I got this one brand new for a good price a few years ago thinking the other drive was pretty old and would need replaced sooner rather than later.  I only hooked it up and used it a few times before putting it away to wait it's turn.

Anyway, cool way to do tech support. Thanks to all who replied so quick, you saved my Saturday.  Really love MC21!!!!
