Recovering License!!!
« on: April 20, 2016, 04:02:15 pm »

Why the heck do I need to keep restoring my license to MC 21 every couple of weeks? I paid $50 to buy the Windows version of Media Center 21! And even when I click on cancel it uses up one of my installs. I lost three installs today alone! I'm down to five now! This seems totally ridiculous. Media Center works great but the licensing is confusing at best and seems to have a mind of its own. If I lose 10 installs before the year is out I will not be happy.

Even if you use all 10 restores, just leave a message here on the forums and they'll reset your restores.

You are undoubtedly doing it wrong.

It is either registered or not. Sounds like you never were registered and you just get a "nag" warning that pops up during your 30 day trial period?

You install the software. You pay. You get a file by email ... which you save to your desktop and click on it ...  the file only last a week or so so you can use the same one on multiple machines. Once registered, you should not have to do it again. You have to just click on the little file with JRiver running then you can see if the registration stuck or not (top menu, under Help registration info). You probably didn't click on the file and you keep going back. Its the file (I think its an mjr extension, don't remember), that unlocks the software, not the website.

And make sure you are running on an administer account in Windows, when you do this

If you use up your installs, they can give you more if you ask nicely :)

I reset your restores.  Like they say, just ask any time.

Matt,

I recently set-up a new desktop, and paid for a restore that I realized I didn't have to.  Could you or someone of the JR end kindly credit my PayPal for the transaction?

What information do you need from me to take care of this?

Thank you!

Also, could someone kindly direct me to the appropriate thread in the forum.  I'm having troubles importing files on my new PC that worked without a hitch previously w/ JR.  I get a message after a largely failed import is run that says "Imported 101 new files.  Updated 103 files that had external changes.  Failed to import 2 files.  Skipped 3121 files (previously determined to be bad).   ?

Can someone give me a hand with this?

Thanks!!

Thanks to all who replied to my post. I really appreciate it. . . .
I think that I did exactly as you wrote above and under `Help' and `Registration Information' it shows that I have a license. So I don't know why it warned me today that my trial period was expiring and I used up one of my installs to be legal again. But ok, MC seems to be running now.

Can someone give me a hand with this?

G'Day Rob,

When you have a question unrelated to the thread, such as in this case, could you in future start a new thread with the question please. Otherwise threads just ramble all over the place and it gets really hard to work out which posts are answering which questions.

First comment on the "previously determined to be bad" issue is, this has been reported by at least one other person, and the fix was simply to shutdown MC and restart it. Maybe reboot your PC just to be sure.

If that doesn't fix it, search the forum for the term "previously determined to be bad" and you will find lots of information.

This post is good, although lacking some detail: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=92548.msg637129#msg637129

Basically Matt is saying create a Smartlist, don't restrict it to any particular media, so all media types will be included, then limit the database to be queried to the "Bad" database. See image for clarification. Then all you need to clear the "Bad" flag is delete the record in that database. That is, delete from the library. Make sure you do not delete the files from disk, or recycle them! You don't want to lose your files completely.  :o Once that is done, reimport the files. That doesn't explain why they were flagged as bad, but the import may work a second time.

Finally, the correct way to transfer a library from one PC to another is to do a library backup on the old PC, and a library restore on the new PC. If the PCs aren't configured identically in terms of drive letters and directories used for media, then you will need to do some maintenance to "fix" the library. If you want to go down that path, search the forum for topics on transferring between PCs. There have been some thorough descriptions of what needs to be done recently.

Some kind forum administrator may split your question out to a new thread, but if no-one does, and you need more information, please do start a new thread, and provide a link back to your original question.

There is no need to restore your license unless you're changing the name of the machine or similar.

Here is how licensing works:

It is possible that something like a registry cleaner is causing problems.  If you want help, please post more details about your system, version , etc.
