While on vacation without internet access, we couldn't watch mkv files I brought along for the kids and had to revert back to Windows Media Center to watch them.

Getting the Internet was not an option...Being disconnected is a must for us while on vacation :)

This was on a laptop that I never used MC for videos...Unpleasant surprise.

thx

That happened to me too (found out when I tried to watch a movie on the plane - with no internet connection). Once it happens, you learn to update the software and then play a movie/show on the laptop before you head out on vacation.

I suppose the reason might be that if you only use RO-Standard (or audio only), there would be no reason to download the madVR components - so in that case having an all-in-one file download would make you download more files than you need.

I'm pretty sure I also tried ROHQ as well and that didn't work either but I'm not a 100% sure...

May have had too many margaritas...

I agree with this request--in fact I've whined about it in the past.  Not just the LAV filters but MadVR.

It's possible that it's not being done for licensing reasons or cost.  If so, then the propellerheads have my sympathy and understanding.  And doing so doubtless involves more work on JRiver's part, so again my sympathies.  But if an upgrade version were able to be packaged complete (or close to complete) if would certainly aid in trial users moving sooner to point of purchase.  After all, there is a certain level of complexity with MC and downloading additional aoftware adds to it.

I'm talking out of my rear but, I think the reasons are equal parts licensing and "optics."

MC is a commercial product.
LAV is not, but Hendrik works for JRiver.
madVR is a third party open project.

OSS people could get grumpy at JRiver, or perhaps even at Hendrik, if it was viewed as "part of" MC, even if technically there is no difference.

Perhaps there could be a reminder to play a video to get these components when one does a new install.

  • I won! I won!

I'm also guessing there is a large % of MC users that don't play video so including it in the download would just bulk it out for many.

  • Where did I put my teeth?

The last time we asked, it was about 40% who said their use was primarily audio.

We think that people who start with audio often go on to video and/or images sometime later.

Maybe if there was a prompt after a fresh install or an update to optionally download and install any additional components (e.g.  madvr ).  It could also be setup up to prompt when items such as LAV filters or MadVR versions are updated or when the applicable settings are changed in option (e.g. if user changes RO standard to ROHQ).

I agree, I can't imagine any reason why a dialog couldn't just pop up when starting an updated version asking "Do you want to add the following optional components now?" followed by a list with checkboxes for all optional components. This pop-up box could even be disabled in the settings for those who only use MC for audio or for some other reason found it intrusive. It could even be one of those side boxes (like the ones that appears after manually importing files or getting tv/movie info).

For the record, I have also experienced not being able to play video on MC due to lack of Internet connection.

An option to have MC play a few second long "Welcome To JRiver" video after updating would get Lav updated and still wouldn't be part of MC.

I don't think anyone using JRiver for "audio only" would mind if the program downloaded LAV automatically (they probably wouldn't even know) - but a lot of Video users do mind if the program doesn't work when they try to play a movie. At least if LAV was built in to the download, one could still play a movie in RO+STD without an Internet connection.

Yup.  As it is now, if you're not expecting it it kinda looks like the program is broken.

If that is the reason and not licensing or political, then you should include it during installation. At least if they didn't enable audio only mode or something.

It's bitten me before too. The extra size is minor. Stuck with no way to play a movie on a plane is not awesome.

OK.  You're right.  We'll change it.  Thanks for suggesting it.

Still a problem for me, with very slow internet.

Was this resolved or not?
