Hi, new user here.

I notice that the album view has duplicate entries for the same album.
The tag editor shows exactly the same album name, if I select multiple files, the tag editor does not show varies, it shows exactly the same album name.
The customize view editor shows the categorization is by album, not album artist.
I know the album artist is different, but the album name is the same.

How do I remove the duplicate albums, and really filter by album name?

Is this for all albums, or just a few?  If it's just a few, it's probably because these albums have songs from multiple artists on the same album.  To fix this, you need to set a single value for [Album Artist] for these albums.  If they are compilations, you can use:
(Multiple Artists)
or
Various Artists
...or something like that.

If this is for ALL albums, we need more information.  A screen shot of one of the albums, showing the songs, including the filename column might be helpful.

The album tag is exactly the same, the album artist tags are empty.

If I create an album artist auto view, it works as expected.

I don't know how to get JR to show me all tags, so I expertod the tags using mediainfo:

Why does the album view not work as expected when the view uses album name and album name is exactly the same?

One way to show the file's tags is to go in the Standard View to Audio>Files, then on the column header "right click" and you can select all the Tags you want to see. You can drag columns left or right, and clicking on the column header will sort by that column.

Thanks, I also figured out how to show more tags in the tag window.

Ok, that's a "various artists" album.  So, in order for MC to group the entire album as one album, it needs to see the same value for [Album Artist] for all tracks.  Highlight all of the tracks and set the [Album Artist] field to something like (Multiple Artists) .  That should do it.

I read what you are saying, but it does not make sense.
The "album" tag is the same, the "album artist" field is empty, the filter UI says it is using only the "album" tag, but that is not what it is doing.
Is the actual behavior not represented in the configuration UI?

That's a very good question actually.    The answer is "no the actual behavior is not *strictly* represented in the view configuration dialog."  [Album Artist] and [Album Artist (auto)] are used any time Album grouping is determined.  I'm not aware of the history or motivation for how it operates; I've just read the article and used it quite a lot, so I'm comfortable with how to make it work.  Here's the article again if you'd like to read through it and gain a bit more understanding:

Or just set [Album Artist] to some value and watch it magically group all of the Frozen songs into one album!

I just feel that the product config UI is not to be trusted.
I'm a new user, the config UI tells me one thing, the behavior shows it is doing something different.
I am left feeling a can of worms await me as I use more features with hidden behaviors.

Don't sweat it.  This is one of a small handful of "magic" behaviors in MC.  Most of these magic behaviors are beneficial and won't get in your way at all.  You can do really complex things in MC and not run into anything weird.

I can understand that feeling!  As a new JRiver MC user, the program is just so darned big!  There's so much it does... it's a whole world.  But don't be worried about too many "hidden behaviors".  There are some for sure; I won't try to tell you otherwise.  But, as I said above, most of these aren't any big deal.

If you run into things you don't understand, post here and someone will likely be able to help you get it figured out.  Most of the configuration problems we see are NOT due to hidden features.  More often they are simply due to how broad MC's configuration options are.  It's not always obvious where to start, or how to get there.  That's what the Wiki and this forum are for. 

I'm sure you're going to learn to really appreciate the immense power of MC.  Good luck.
