How to modify false bitdepth value?
« on: May 22, 2016, 04:42:16 pm »

As some already experienced, quite some 16bit files are shown as 24 bit bitdepth. As I built categorized views by bitdepth I'd like to set the fals detected 24bit files to 16 bit manually, Is this possible (as the field seems to be read only by default)?
Any other Chance to get the real values shown?

Could you provide me a sample of one of the files where we get the wrong bitdepth?  That's confusing to me, because the bitdepth determining code should be pretty bullet proof.

I'm matt at jriver dot com.

Thanks.

i've never seen a problem with this

i'm assuming you have a 24 file that is reading as 16...are you sure it's 24, i've been "bit" with this one before where i thought it was an HD download

For whatever reason, I had 3 albums reporting 16 bit as 24 bit. I found re-ripping (I use dBpoweramp) and re-importing to be the solution. The only differences I noticed after audio analysis were bit depth, bitrate and sample rate.

It's possible that they are HDCD's. dBpoweramp has the option to rip them as 24 bit.
Maybe you had this option enabled the first time you ripped them.

So dBpoweramp has two ways it will produce 24bit from CD rips.  1. You tell it to always make 24bit files where it just pads the data. 2. Is there is a CD format HDCD https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Definition_Compatible_Digital that dbpoweramp can recognize and then if it does it will rip the track as 24bit audio since 20bit is not commonly supportted.

I'm sorry, non of your assumptions is matching. I have dozends of false recognized 16bit files (non HDCD).

I sent a sample to Matt

I sent a sample to Matt

I got a sample and it imports and plays as 24-bit.  I'm not seeing any mystery.

Gulp (the original poster) claims that the file he sent you is really a 16 bit file; not 24 bit.

Perhaps you have some analysis you have run that proves it's really a 24 bit file?  I don't know who is right here, I'm just trying to provide some clarity.

Bit depth is encoded, it's unlikely there is a mistake.  Stranger things have happened but a quick check in audacity (free) could help

The free Bitter VST can be useful in situations like these. http://www.stillwellaudio.com/plugins/bitter/
As long as you have all other DSP disabled, it will show you how many bits are being used.

I sent another file to Matt, which I personally ripped with dbpoweramp from a 16 bit red book CD.

I also have many files, where just 2 out of 10 show as 24 bit, the rest as 16bit

This is common with HDCD.

Would it possible for you to list some of the album names that are showing up as 24 bit?

Both files you sent are 24 bit files.   Please talk to DBPoweramp.

Yes it seems, DBpoweramp from time to time false recognizes 16bit CD's and rips them as 24bit (althought they are not HDCD).
I will have to re-rip them probably, as I guess regarding sound, it's more harm than advantage to leave them converted to 24bit.

Thanks for your effort!

I've noticed this new problem too. The Analyse Audio is not changing the bit depth nor sample rate values.

MC's own ripping is excellent.

MC's own ripping is excellent.

Definitely!  Put it in secure mode, and sleep well at night.
