When I open any of my MKV files, madVR crashes. I've ripped these discs using MakeMKV from my own Blu Rays.

These files were working last week, but not this week. Audio will continue to play, and I can tell MC to continue on the error, but video never appears.

I get a big red error in MC madVR reports:

"Direct3D initialization crashed for unknown reasons"

I have confirmed that VLC does indeed play the files on this same machine. The 1080i content looks like crap there, so hoping there's a fix for MC.

The only change I've made is I updated my video drivers to the latest available from AMD:

"AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition Display Driver version 16.15.2211"

Before I roll back, I wanted to see if there was anything I can do to get this version to work.

I've tried:

Red October HQ
Red October Normal
GPU acceleration on
GPU acceleration off

Not sure what other settings to try within MC's video option settings.

The reason I upgraded was because Forza 6 Apex wanted the latest drivers. So I either can play Apex, or I can use MC (assuming rolling drivers back fixes the issue). I use MC more, so will likely roll back if that's the only option and hope newer driver upgrades don't cause the same issue.

Attached is a crash report. I have removed my user name, and other personally identifiable information, but have made no other alterations.

The latest AMD drivers are known to be rather unstable, not sure there is anything we can do about that right away.

AMD did release a new driver just today, maybe thats worth trying, it should be version 16.20.1013.

I have the latest drivers from the AMD website. I have a 200 series, so my drivers were updated yesterday. I installed that this morning (previous update had been made on May 16, 2016) in hopes it would allow me to run Apex and MC. It crashes the same way.

Have you tried manually updating madVR to v0.90.20, which says it has added workaround for weird crash with latest AMD beta drivers?

Awesome Donkey - I hadn't tried that. I will do that now. Hopefully that works, and I can move on.

Hey Awesome Donkey, your name is correct. You are awesome.

Installed madVR, set it to custom instead of Red October, and now my MKVs work fine. Red October, either configuration, crashes out in the "weird" way.

I guess JRiver will update madVR when we get access to 22. In the meantime, this work around is fine for me.

Personally I'd have been fine waiting for 22 since I paid for it, but I suppose there may also be people sticking to 21. Makes sense to update.

You should be able to override the madVR build MC21 uses by simply replacing the madVR binary files where MC downloads and uses them. I can't remember the specific location at the moment - I know it's in a folder somewhere in %APPDATA%\J River\Media Center 21.

The location is:

%AppData%\Roaming\J River\Media Center 21\Plugins\madvr

I renamed the old folder, just in case, then copied the newer madvr folder over and.... it works perfectly now, including the Red October options.

The next build, 21.0.84, should solve this.  It includes the newer madVR.  The build should be posted in a few minutes at the top of this board.

Dang it Jim, I just fixed this, and all I needed to do was be patient!?

EDIT- just updated. Deleted the folder I created in %AppData%... just to be safe before install.

Installed, ran one of my previously broken MKVs with Red October HQ and... it works fine.
