DLNA Server On JRiver
« on: January 29, 2013, 11:48:29 am »

Hii

I was wondering if anyone can tell me when using JRiver aa DLNA Server.

Does it handle the library as it was reading from a path hard drive.

I concidering buying the, JRiver software and the Netgear Ready Nas NV+ 4, but I have to be sure before i buy, it can do the things I am looking for.

It has to have all the feautures and have the same interface when using the DLNA server on JRiver? Does it have that? See Picture Below

5. DLNA Servers are displayed under File > Library. Once you select one, you can browse its library as if it were a normal MC library.

It is taken from an context at this link:

Welcome to the forum.

If you're using MC on both sides, use Library Server, not DLNA Server.  It's better and faster than using a DLNA Server.

If you're not using MC on the server side, but you have something like a NAS drive with built in DLNA Server, MC can load it as a library, but it's not as fast.

I am a newbie and I may admid I do not understand what you are writing.

Can you please explain it to a newbie?  ;)

The NAS is a, Netgear Ready Nas NV+ Version 2 , and has a build in DLNA server

Media Streaming

DLNA Certified media server
Logitech Squeezebox
Sonos Digital Music Center
Network DVD player compatible
Windows MCE compatible
Sony PlayStation 3
Microsoft Xbox 360

Can you explain that too a little deeper? :)

It might be better to explain what you are trying to accomplish.  Re-reading your post, I'm not sure what you need and want to do.

I would like to know if when using a DLNA Certified NAS Server with DNLA look the same like the main library from a path on a harddrive.

When using a NAS as Netgear Ready Nas NV+ Version 2

My question is will the media library look like the picture below or else I will not buy a NAS server?

DLNA devices and their capabilities vary so much that your question is difficult to answer.

First, MC has the ability to present content to DLNA devices in various ways, that you can configure.  One such way is to present the information in a file path hierarchy.

However, it is to the whims of the DLNA device as to how it ultimately shows this presentation.  Some devices (e.g. Xbox) force content to appear a certain way.  Other devices are more robust and follow the containers specified by the server.

What you see on the screen with DLNA device will not look much like the view you see in MC.  DLNA is just too restricted.

You want to think of DLNA as a simple protocol, with simple presentations, to allow sending content to a device.  If you are looking for a richer experience, you want to use an HTPC software and system connected to your TV.

The NAS device you mention seems to have a DLNA server.  But you don't need that if you are managing content in MC and want to use MC as the DLNA server.  Use the NAS for serving files to Windows (and other) systems.  Use MC for presenting those files in beautiful ways, and playing them on various systems.

When using J River with a NAS:

1. You can use the NAS as a simple file server, and build your J River library from the files in the same way as if they were on the C: drive.  You have complete customisation control over the way the library is catalogued and indexed. but you will need to make sure the files re tagged properly with metadata.

2. You can use the NAS as a DLNA server which J River can connect to and display. In this case, the cataloguing and indexing of the files is done by the NAS and J River has no control over it.  J River will display whatever the NAS is sending.

3. In either case, you can also use J River as a DLNA server, which will broadcast its library (whether a local library or coming from a NAS DLNA server) to other DLNA devices/clients.  If the client is actually another PC that is running J River then it is best not to use DLNA Server but use J River's own client/server protocol, called Library Server.

Thanks you very much for the reply.  :)

I think that nailed it  :)

If I Iunderstand it correctly.

My library is catalogued and indexed with the properly tags, It vould look like it is reading from a path on the hard drive when using it like a simple file server. Like the picture I uploaded.

Hello, I am thinking of using my Synology NAS as a file server source as you mention in option 1. I am new to JRiver And media servers in general. I am trying to set this up the proper way and need some guidance.
I have a Synology NAS that holds all my music. I have 2 sonos devices that connect to it. I'd like to have JRiver access the NAS like Sonos - using a name and password only when I get music from the NAS.
Can JRiver pass authentication (name, password) to access the NAS?
In this scenario does JRiver modify the music tags? I don't have jpgs in the folders, just embedded in the files.

Thanks, Al

Running trial version of JRiver on two PCs, where Windows 7 (W7) is Server and W10 is tablet (must be Control Point) serving DAC via USB, I want W7 rather than W10 to transcode/upsample flac to wav. I can get Library Server mode working thereby playing W7 files on W10 (operating W10 as Control Point) - but not transcoding/upsampling on W7 (and suspect this is not possible). I cannot get DLNA (vs. Library Server) working at all - let alone confirmation of transcoding/upsampling on W7 rather than W10 (emphasise W10 must be Control Point). I have transcode/upsample settings correct on Server in "Add or configure DLNA Servers" on W7. What are the necessary other settings? TIA

Thank you Jim

These already printed off, read, annotated, digested ... hence post ... it may help to understand that my Control Point is not the same PC as my Server

So, step by step, what did you do and where did you get stuck.

So, step by step, what did you do and where did you get stuck.

W10 - a tablet PC - feeds my DAC via USB. I want it to remain quiet / do as little work as possible. I can install JRiver (trial) on this W10. I can adjust Audio settings and play local files on W10. I can transcode/upsample in DSP Studio on W10. Contrary to what one may read on the web, I think that JRiver perhaps plays better (cf. SQ) than foobar2000 doing exactly the same job, and that is why I want to persevere with JRiver.
Turning to streaming instead of single PC:
I can get foobar (foo_upnp installed) on W10 (in listening room) to play music *streamed from* W7 (a hi-spec stable workhorse machine not in the listening room) either from Minimserver (flac:wav24;88 for my Linn AV 5103's integral DAC) - or from foobar Media Server on W7 - in either case with the stream *already transcoded/upsampled* on W7.
I want JRiver on W7 to do the same thing as an alternative to Minim/foobar.
Using JRiver MC on W10, I can read W7's Library and play W7's files - Library Server mode as described by csimon - but any transcoding/upsampling is done on W10 this way.
Hence - there is a distinction - wrt my needs - between JRiver in Library Server mode and DLNA mode.
I need W7 as JRiver Server, streaming to W10 *transcoding/upsampling on W7* with W10 as Control Point (or Renderer if no Control Point is necessary - NB: foobar's UPnP Browser on W10 gives full access to, and play-control of, W7's Library, without its "Media Renderer" having to be started - and without use of its "UPnP Controller").
In JRiver MC, on both W7 and W10, I have the Media Network settings checked so that I can see Servers on W7 and W10 mutually.
What other settings (Audio / Media Network) are required such that *on W10* I can select and play flacs stored on W7 - but in DLNA mode - such that *transcoding/upsampling happens on W7* ...
... just like I can do so easily in foobar ...
... but I want the SQ enhancement I (think I ;-) hear in JRiver (fuller - more analogue-like).
TIA

Addendum - I have confirmed that I can - *operating in JRiver's MC on W7* - send W7's music files to W10's Renderer appearing under W7's "Playing Now" - where the transcoding/upsampling happens as it should - i.e. as set in "Add or Configure DLNA Servers" on W7 ...
The final *vital* missing step is to be able to perform the same operation/otherwise control play in JRiver MC on W10.

Addendum #2 - "Playing Now"/"Overview" in JRiver's MC on W7 shows the full queue of files being streamed to W10 as described immediately above. On W10 in Playing Overview, however, I can see only the present playing file and - if streaming has progressed sufficiently - the next. I can advance to the next on W10, but can see no more of the queued files, nor operate on them. I can, however, see W7's Library. I can even send W7 files to the same Playing Now queue as those files being streamed - but such files are played in Library Server mode not DLNA mode - i.e., at the sampling rate set in DSP Studio on W10 not the sampling rate set in ""Add or Configure DLNA Servers" on W7.
As an aside - I am not positively struck by SQ in streaming mode when successfully achieved on W7 (vs. W10 at my coffee table - being the main sticking point here) - although these are only first impressions. I am likely to give up on the idea of streaming as I had hoped using JRiver, and may consider purchasing the software if I remain convinced that SQ in single PC mode is better than that via foobar whether single PC mode or streaming. I can see a Cognitive Dissonance assault - possibly even a microRendu - coming my way. :-)

+1 on the microRendu.  I use it in different modes, but it certainly integrates well with DLNA & JRiver.  I am accessing my JRiver Id library on the microRendu via jremote.  Sounds very good.
