Jerky playback on some movies
« on: June 14, 2016, 10:27:10 am »

Some videos in my library are jerky, and it happens with both bluray, and dvd mkvs  I am thinking this is a refresh rate problem. I have a Mitsubishi wd92840 TV, and my PC has a low end AMD silent graphics card.  Windows is telling me through the advanced display settings tab that my tv is compatible with these refresh rates: 60hz, 59hz, 24hz, 23hz, 29hz, and 30hz.  My video settings are red October HQ, and I have fullscreen exclusive enabled.  Mad VR displays 60 hz as the refresh rate for my TV.  Can I change the FPS tag on my video files, and fix this, or how should I troubleshoot this problem.  It seems much worse on DVDs than it is on Blurays.

What happens if you try to play them with Red October Standard?

What version of MC are you using?

Your graphics card isn't powerful enough for RO HQ. Since the problem is worse on DVDs, the card is struggling to upsample the source material.

In regards to your framerate question, you need to enable Automatic Display Settings changing in Tools > Options > Video > Display Settings.

I'm usinc MC 21...86.  Lowering the video quality to red October standard made dvd playback smoother.  I know I've played several dvds in the past with red October HQ, and it worked fine.  I already have automatic display mode enabled.  I changed some settings within mad VR so I'll have to look into that again, and dial it back down until it at plays smoothly.  I'm more worried about Blu-ray quality than DVD quality at this point because I buy movies I really like on Blu-ray. Some other questions,

How much do Mad VR settings effect Blu-ray playback?  I ask because I know its meant to improve DVD quality but I'm not sure how much it effects blu-ra1080p material.

Please run a benchmark (under Help) and post the result here.

That's a good machine.  You shouldn't have any trouble playing video.

Did you try MC's stock Red October HQ?  In other words, without making any custom changes in madVR.

Did you try a search here for "refresh rate"?  Using the advanced search, I found this, for example:

I switched my refresh rate to 60 in mad vr.  Blurays play fine, but I'm still getting weird issues with dvds.  I might just use EVR for dvd playback because I have heard it requires fewer resources.  Thanks for the help.

I think it is more likely a setup issue. What video card do you use?

Have you checked the settings in madVR under Processing>deinterlacing? Do you have "automatically activate deinterlacing when needed" checked?
Do you have multiple display modes entered in madVR (under Devices>Display Modes)? Such as 1080p24, 1080p30, 1080p60 (or 1080p23, 1080p29, 1080p59). Also, in MC under Tools>options>Video>Display Modes, do you have "Display Settings automatic change mode" set to On or Custom or Off?

You can also watch a movie and bring up the madVR stats view ("Ctrl+J") look at the number of dropped frames, and presentation times, and similar performance measurements to help figure out the problem.

I have automatically activate deinterlacing when needed checked, along with when in doubt deactivate.  Before I did not have any display modes entered into mad vr because I was under the impression that either mad VR, or JRiver would select the best display mode for me because I had display settings automatic change mode set to On.  I have put these display modes into mad vr: 1080p24, 1080p23, 1080p29, 1080p30, 1080p59, 1080p60.  I tried displaying madvr stats, and nothing pops up.  I checked the keyboard shortcuts, and it shows that same shortcut so, I'm not sure if there is a bug with this version, or what.  Some dvds still play choppy while others don't.  I have two movies that each have a dimension of 720 by 480 with 30hz refresh rates.  One of them plays smoothly, and the other doesn't.  Is there another way to view the madvr stats?

I tried changing the keyboard shortcut for view stats, and they still don't pop up.  I'm thinking I have the jerky playback issue solved though.  I had jinc selected for image upscaling, and moving the upscaling method to any other selection plays video smoothly.
