Super-slow CD access/initialization
« on: August 05, 2003, 10:15:11 am »

(continued from Beta 9.1.226 thread)

MC 9.1.226 takes several minutes to do anything CD-related. I insert a CD, select it from the list of drives and it takes several minutes to display the tracks. Meanwhile, it says, "Gathering Information and updating view..." This happens before MC accesses YADB, and it even happens on my notebook PC connected to a T1 line. I timed this at just over five minutes before YADB comes up.

Additionally, it takes several minutes to start ripping a CD. I click rip and tell it to start. Ripping starts six minutes later.

This has been a problem since MC 9 beta was released. I never had this problem in MJ 8.

Someone from JRiver contacted me about the problem, but has not replied to my last e-mail in over a month. Thus I repost for help.

I've tested this on two computers.

Toshiba Satellite 1955-s801 notebook computer.

We don't do e-mail support.  This is it.  If you'll stick with it, we'll try to help.

What do the two PC's have in common?  Are they on the same network?

You have a lot of memory being used.  Can you strip the machine down, getting rid of anything that isn't necessary?  Just to see if the problem is related to other software.

Any "special" CD software installed?  Roxio, Nero, etc?  Software that turns a CD into an ordinary drive?

The problem isn't occurring commonly, so help us find out what the difference is.

By e-mail, I meant that one of the JRiver staff e-mailed me about the problem. But this is fine here.

The issue with low free RAM was that I forgot to quit several other programs I had running (Outlook, Outlook Express, few instances of IE, Trillian, and some other background programs).

My two computers are only on the same network at home. Otherwise, they're 60 miles apart. Both computers have nearly the same software installed.

"Striped down," (via "End Task") the problem still occurs.

I have Nero Burning ROM and VirtualCD 4.2 (I think) installed, but neither of them were installed when I first tested MC 9 beta.

The upgrade path may be relavent, too.

Did you install 9/9.1 over the top of MJ without uninstalling older version first? Clean installs seem to be the best bet. I think this is true even within the same version, where very early beta's may leave garbage behind (as files or registry entries).

Xen, I don't agree, and I would not recommend it unless all else fails.  Normally, installing over an old version is fine.

well in the past going from MJ8 to MC9 it was always better to uninstall MJ8 and install MC9.

since i have not done this recently i can't say for sure, but going from MJ8 and allowing MC9 to convert the databases etc... has never worked correctly for me and always had problems of some sort or another.

I went from Mj8 to MC9 about 5 times and never worked correctly for me.

so i agree with xen-uno in this regard.

as for the problem i have no clue, and i do not have this problem.

I've not seen a problem converting from MJ8 to MC9, but it's always possible.  If it was a common problem, it should have been pretty visible here.  Maybe I just don't see it.

The "odd" problems often turn out to be bugs other places.  Via chipset, for example, or sound card drivers, or firewalls that aren't disabled when you disable  them, etc. etc. etc.

VirtualCD 4.2

Any chance you'd disable / uninstall this and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks.

From a more macroscopic perspective...

I've done a ton of OS re-installs in my time, often duplicating (verbatim) the previous setup. It amazed me how often things that didn't work well suddenly improved afterwards. What changed? The registry for one...removal of redundant, obsolete and possibly conflicting files for another.

So while a uninstall of MC may be a last resort, I would wager 10 quatloo's it would solve the problem, given that no other problems with the systems & apps has been mentioned.

I think it may depend on the version of mj8 and MC9.

I was also using a beta of MC9 at the time.

And it is always possible that there maybe problems on a users system.

So if you may have a semi corrupt MJ8 database upgrading mc9 may make matters worse.

I completely disabled it via End Task, but I haven't tried uninstalling it. However, when MC 9-beta was first released, I didn't have VirtualCD. At least I don't think I did.

I just tested this on a co-worker's computer and did not haver the problem. Below is her system info.

Media Center 9.1.226 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\

Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)
Intel Unknown 17 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 522 MB, Free - 266 MB

Ripping /   Drive D:   Copy mode:ModeBurstBigBuffer   CD Type:Auto   Read speed:Max
 Drive E:   Copy mode:ModeBurstBigBuffer   CD Type:Auto   Read speed:Max
Digital playback: Yes /  Use YADB: Yes /  Get cover art: No /  Calc replay gain: Yes /  Copy volume: 32767
Eject after ripping: No /  Play sound after ripping: No

Burning /  Drive E: CDWRITER IDE3212            Addr: 1:0:0  Speed:32  MaxSpeed:32  BurnProof:Yes
Test mode: No /  Eject after writing: Yes /  Direct decoding: Yes /  Write CD-Text: No
Use playback settings: No /  Normalization: None

I think I also tried the unstalling 9 and 8 and reinstalling. Nothing.

I'll try uninstalling VirtualCD to see if it's the problem.

Yup...great episode. My favorite is the spores...where Spock is hanging upside down in a tree and tells Kirk to get bent.

"VirtualCD"

Thats a scary name, as in everywhere on your PC?

That one (This Side of Paradise) and the 7 year itch (or rut?) episode (Amok Time?) are the only ones where Spocko wants to get funky as I recall. You have to wonder...would Viagra help a vulcan?

Some of the episode titles are simply beautiful...

The City on the Edge of Forever
Tomorrow Is Yesterday
Who Mourns of Adonis?
Is There In Truth No Beauty?
For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky
All Our Yesterdays

So...King...what media are the episodes on? I would LOVE to have a high quality ape, ogg, or even an mp3 of Spock jammin with the space hippies (The Way to Eden). I've tried playing my bicycle wheel...but I just can't get some of the transitions down. I might do better if I had the original track to listen to and study. Heyeeyh Brother!

Thank you for returning to the original topic. Let's stay on it, please.

Not much has been said to fix my problem. The only "hanging" idea is to uninstall Virtual CD, but I wasn't able to do that last night.

Please try sending me a log file using these instructions:

Turn on MC's logging for CD ripping by changing the value of this registry key from zero (0) to one (1):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Reader\Logger

Then just start up Media Center and try to rip a CD. Then exit MC and find a file in the MC program directory called "cdripper.log" and email that to me. Remember that the log file is overwritten each time you start up MC, so you must send the file before restarting MC.

Thanks!

AH-HA! Virtual CD 4.2 was the problem! Actually, the virtual CD-ROM drive it created was the problem. I disabled the drive via Device Manager, and MC worked great!

I downloaded the demo for Virtual CD 5.0 and it did not cause this problem. Because I already have Nero Burning ROM, I'll try its ImageDrive thing to see if it conflicts as well.

John from JRiver pointed out to me that Virtual CD came in version 4.51. Since I had 4.2, the update was free, and it fixed the problem. Thus, JRiver is not to blame!

Yipee! I can rip CDs in less than 20 minutes now!
