Lost Playlists after upgrade to MC 21
« on: July 23, 2016, 10:51:25 am »

I've just upgraded from MC 16 to MC21 and I now have approximately 60 playlists, that I guess, are new default categories such as "Podcast -- Video Podcasts" and "Audio -- Task -- Possible duplicates". I have very little interest in these 60 playlists. However, all of my own custom playlists are now gone? How can I retrieve these or get them back?

Restore a backup of your previous version.  MC makes them automatically.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 as there is only 1 week left to do it for free. MC16 would not work under windows 10. Therefore, I paid $$ for the upgrade to MC 21 (on my way to MC 22). So is there a way to restore the previous playlists while staying at version 21? If so, how? Should I jump straight to MC 22?

The playlists are part of your JRiver Library.  This is JRiver's database.  You need to transfer the database from MC16 to MC21.  So..

Back up the library in MC16:  File > Library > Backup library
Make note of where this file is located.  It's the backup you need.
Now, in MC21 restore it:  File > Library Restore Library .  Choose the file you just created in MC16

Now all of your songs, playlists, etc should be present in MC21.  :)

Good luck.

Again, the whole reason I upgraded MC is because MC 16 now gives me an error message when I try and run it, "Media Center was installed under a different operating system. Please reinstall media center." So I can't run MC 16 in order to back up that database.

I missed that detail.  Sorry about that.

As Jim indicated, MC makes automatic Database backups. They should be in your Documents/JRiver folder.  Take a look and you should find some recent backups there.  Then you can restore one of those into MC21.

Though I see old program folders/files:

Program Files (x86) / J River
   Media Center 12
   Media Center 15
   Media Center 16
   Media Center 21

I think I'm sol. I only see the "Media Center 21" directory under documents.

Documents / JRiver
Media Center 21 / Library Backups / MC Library Backup (Main Library - July).zip

I even tried a right-click restore previous versions on the "JRiver" folder.

Thank you all though. I appreciate it.

My experience with MC only goes back to MC20, so I'm not sure how (or if) MC16 made backups. I was hoping it was to the standard location.

Good luck.

Use the OS to search for zip files.

C:\Users\Randy\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Library Backups\MC Library Backup (WD Passbook E - 2016-07-16).zip

THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH! It restored fine.
