Intensity in tag and/or smartlists removed
« on: July 30, 2016, 01:56:54 pm »

Hi, I have a problem. For several years I have been marking all my music not only with stars/rating 1-5, but also with my own interpretation of Intensity 1-5. I have around 6000 songs in my library and have used - well... some parts of my life - to mark all this music. This has worked very well in making smartlists for many years.

After Windows 10 came one night and made my older MC version stop working I have now installed MC21, and after import of library backup I find the Intensity column still there - but empty! And editing smartlist I find the option Intensity in the dropdown removed.

How can I continue my life now?

Try restoring a backup again.

It's possible that the information wasn't written to the file.  MC has an option for this.

I will do that, but somehow it seems strange that Intensity is no longer available in the dropdown while editing smartlists. How come? Obsolete?

You need to find a backup that was made from your older version of MC that had the Intensity tag in it.  Then, restore that database into the new MC.  If the tag was in your database, it should definitely be in the database backup.

What version of MC was your older version?

My previous version was MC17.

I have had this Intensity Column in every backup for many years.

I have tried now with backups from 2014, 2013 and 2012. Same problem.

But in the dropdown in Smartlist Edit the option Intensity is not available!

And for all Smartlists it now states f.ex. "Custom" and -[Intensity]=3

Previously it stated f.ex. "Intensity" and "is not" 3.

So somehow this has been automatically replaced for every Smartlist.

I attach a screenshot for your reference.

I've heard that when you upgrade across several major versions of MC, that you have to go in increments.  Like from MC17 to MC18.  Then MC18 to MC19, etc.

I haven't personally experienced this, but that's what I've read.  I think it's because the database structure can change between major versions.  So when you try to skip across several major versions, the database in the newest one probably doesn't know how to handle a backup from several versions back.

Sorry I don't have more advice; perhaps someone else here can offer more experienced guidance.

Good luck.

Thank you, I might try to find downloadable 18, 19 and 20 then.

But it is strange that the Option Intensity is no longer in the dropdown list when editing Smartlist, right? Is it available in your dropdown?

I really hope someone from JRiver can sort this out...

I have used so many weeks of my life to mark all these files.

I just realized that Intensity used to be a stock field.  But it's been "obsoleted" and is no longer a stock field in MC.

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Predefined_Library_Fields  (scroll down until you find Intensity)

This might have something to do with it not wanting to import.

If you want to try stepping through the various versions of MC, here they are:

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Old_Versions

But the thing is, if MC17 wouldn't run under Windows 10, I don't know what will happen with 18, or 19 either.  You might need to build a virtual machine, or find another computer running Windows 7, 8, or XP.  I'm just not sure.

If you have major trouble trying to get those older versions installed on some machine, I might be able to get it done in a VM.  I think I can clone one of my existing ones and try to install 18, 19, etc and see if the database upgrade works.

BTW, you keep talking about your smartlists, but you haven't mentioned if the Intensity field data is actually there for your songs.  Do you see Intensity values for your songs?  Try to add it as a column and see what it shows.

So kind! I might even pay for help :) If you or JRiver might help.

I understand this is an obsolete field, but if I am able to get an older version to import and show the data somehow, it coulld be possible to copy this into a new field - custom or built-in.

I think I mentioned the column for Intensity is empty. So Intensity data does not show now.

While that works, it isn't necessary.  You should be able to upgrade from at least two versions back.

If you added the Intensity tag as a custom tag, the information may be in the files.  Try adding it again in MC22.  Spelling must match.

No, the data is in the Intensity column that used to be there as a standard column/field.

In the tag window, choose "All tags".

If you don't have an Intensity tag, please read the wiki about Custom Tags.

You can add any existing tag to any display by right clicking on the bar where the labels are.

Not sure where or what the tag window is, but are you sure we are sepaking about hte same thing?

The Intensity field/tag/column or what it should precisely be named, was obsoleted here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Predefined_Library_Fields

But before it was obsoletede this was a standard field in Media Center, and I uses it probably wrongly, but I guess my older database backups still contains this data for the Intensity column - approximately 5500 files with this information somehow connected to them in the database.

The problem came when I updated from an older version to 21.

So if I add a custom tag called Intensity now, I guess I will still have to manually put in the data for each and every file. This will take many many days.

Hi again :)  I found the tag window and I added the Intensity field, but no data shows up in the column. This is because the import of database backups does not import my old standard Intensity field. So I am pretty sure I need help.

That sounds like the tags weren't written to the files.  If you run the old MC17, you can change the setting for that and let MC write the tags to the file.

There are tag utility programs that can show what tags are in the file.

I am also quite sure the information resides only in the database, not in the files.

Try a right click on the install file.  I believe that Windows will let you install it differently.  Compatibility?

Yesss! thanks :) At least now I can see the data, and it should be a small task to get the data into new field I guess :)

Brilliant. I learned something today too.
