Playback stop when exiting even with server running
« on: August 02, 2016, 11:54:16 pm »

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=94735.0

Bumping this because it was an issue over the weekend again.

It would be really nice to have playback continue when Media Server is active and you close the window, instead of shutting down all audio and video playback across the house.

It doesn't close the Media Center process, it just seems to hide the UI and issue a stop command. I'd like an option for it to not stop playback.
Maybe even add a "stop all playback" command to the Media Server tray menu (which would be nice to have anyway) if you think that's going to be a problem.

Hi there.  Are there any plans to add such functionality?

Don't close the window, "minimize" it if you don't want to see MC

Thanks,  I guess that means "no" to my question?!

Are you running Media Server?

Sounds like a bug. Can confirm this is happening here too.

Minimize keeps JRiver open in the taskbar. Close hides in the tray.
The problem is that close also sends stop commands - which shouldn't happen with the server enabled.
The whole point of running an app in "server" mode is that it's supposed to prevent playback interruptions and stay in an always-on state.

Yes, I run the server (it's activated to start with windows).

That was also the assumption of some in my linked thread but somehow nobody cared anymore..
I guess what CountryBumkin means by "minimize" is that you check the checkbox "minimize into tray" in the options. With that option active, when you close the GUI (X in the upper right corner), it gets minimized to the tray (and leads to a server icon and an MC icon in the GUI).

Well that's just how it works.  If you close the program in server mode, the server parts keep running but playback stops.

Thanks Matt. I understand that playback stops. What I'd like to have is an option to leave the playback on (not the minimizing thing).

You will need to minimize, not close.

Why is it a problem to minimize?

Isn't the point of a server mode that it's always running?
Kind of defeats the purpose if you have to keep the program open and running in the taskbar.

The point of server mode is for MC to be reachable from other systems.
People typically expect their audio to stop when they close the application.

It is possible to use MC as a client and server on the same machine.  I don't know whether it would affect this.

Since I do not close the server down, just the GUI, I expect the audio to keep playing. I do not like to have two different icons for the same (well not by definition but for my use case) application with redundant functionality running in my tray.

Well, a new point of server mode could be a new feature (for the audiophile): play music without the need for a GUI (you see how much people like the sox resampler and how much talk the implementation generates). And if people typically expect audio to stop when you close the application, why not make it optional for the (not so typical) user?!

In spite of what some audiophiles may say, a GUI has no affect on audio.

I expect local playback to stop when I close a media player.
I don't expect it to shut down all audio/video playback when I close the GUI for a server.

With the way that JRiver is set up, where client and server are the same process, you would probably have to designate each zone as local or remote to determine which should be stopped when closing the client window.
Local would be zones which play back in the same room as the PC and remote zones would be ones which feed audio to the rest of the house.

Edit: I think tyler69 and I are talking about separate things here.
My issue is with functionality from a media server point of view, nothing to do with "audio quality".

No, we do talk about the same thing (you basically repeated my words in your first two sentences).

Me talking about audiophiles: I tried to make a point that there are people -like JimH pointed out- who think that running an application without a GUI might have an influence on the sound.
I just wanted to show a way for JRiver of "benefitting" from the feature (that's why I brought up sox). For example, people also like playing music which is loaded into RAM (and that's a functionality that every "audiophile" player "has" to offer nowadays), so what?!

For me it's about convenience and usability, like I laid out in my previous post.

well i understand this is complex, but been following this thread since it started.. i really like it when i stop mc ( while running the server) playback stops. thats how most applications work.. the server is for my wife to get to the files.. now that this is not working fluently, start playback on the machine where the is server running without gui using gizmo or what ever, is possible and to stop it localy you have to start mc first and then close it.. its about all the different scenarios people use mc.. i like the way it is handled now..

just wanted to say that :)
gab

oh and i also believe the gui has nothing to do with getting worse sound.. but if so use gizmo to start the playback omn the server.. i guess it could even been done via firefox using webgizme from the server )or the new thing they brought to us with mc 22) .. :)

edit.. in my perfect world, i could run the mc server on a machine, and a client to playback on the same machine, where the client could switch to an other local library without having influence on the library the server is using.. ah well.. we all have ou dreams.... and that would be exactly opposite of how you guys would want it to work.. :)

I would agree in case you needed to open the gui to start the playback but with server running you don't.
Starting playback from gizmo with no gui then opening and closing gui stops playback. This shouldn't happen.
