The new JRiver Forum look
« on: August 15, 2016, 05:16:40 pm »

I like the lighter colors and other changes that appeared today after the forum maintenance/update process completed.
It looks fresher and it's easier on the eyes.

Yes, it is nice but...............
Putting the "NEW" tag at the end of a thread title means that the tags do not align and that makes it a bit more difficult to scan down the list than when they preceded the title.

Still getting used it. Absolutely not missing those social media buttons. For grumpy old me, they were an eyesore that just slowed down the load of the page. Did anyone actually use those for anything useful?

Any chance of a dark theme for dim room/night time viewing.

New look doesn't work for me, but when did I ever like changes :)

The "new" icon isn't as prominent as the boldening of threads with new replies, which would, at a glance, highlight those threads that required attention.

There also seems to be too much whitespace, making everything feel too spread out.

I suppose I'll get used to it.

I have to agree the increase in the amount of space around everything makes scanning the forum more difficult.

It's been years since I've written any CSS but for anyone using the Stylish add-on in their browser, I uploaded a custom style for the site that should make things a bit easier to read.
I agree that the "new" indicator should be at the front of a post rather than the end, and making new topics bold - or perhaps italic to separate them from pinned topics - might help too.

It's pretty simple to scrunch things together more.
The "New" tag is something I hacked into the previous forum. I'll see if I can hack it into this one.

The current forum database appears to be a mixture of utf8 fonts and non-utf8 fonts since some users are using utf8 fonts (the default which changed some time ago) and older users are using non-utf8 fonts.

What this means is that some posts might look to be missing information or have garbage characters in them. I'd like to convert the whole database to utf8 but that has some possible downsides as well.

If someone notices weirdness on existing posts, especially if they are using a non-english language please let me know...

Thanks.

Must be dependent on the specific User/monitor.
Over here it looks great, no excessive white space, everything spaced nicely and evenly.
Maybe its somewhat dependent on the Browser too (I use IE 11).

New look doesn't work for me, but when did I ever like changes :)

I suppose I'll get used to it.

It freaked me out yesterday when I visited. I was all confused about what happened (and not entirely sure it wasn't just faulty memory).

I think I'll get used to it. My initial reaction was "eww, bad" but I think that's more "change is bad" (gut-instinct) than an actual review of the changes.

One firm bit of feedback: I don't think it looks as good with the JRiver header image up top as the old design. That image header now looks "big, black, and heavy" compared to the lighter forum colors.

Otherwise? Meh. I'll get used to it.

Profile settings seem to have changed. Unless you edit your profile no one will be able to send you a personal message. Also, it's really hard to find your last post now.

I just checked and mine seem to be set to receive messages from all members and email me when I get them.  I have not changed any options there.

Also, it's really hard to find your last post now.

Here's an easy way:

Click on Profile in the menu bar.  You'll see your profile summary.  Just below your name you'll see "show posts".  Click that and you're there.

Yup. Same here. No profile changes.

Click on Profile in the menu bar.  You'll see your profile summary.  Just below your name you'll see "show posts".  Click that and you're there.

That still works for me as well, as does clicking on any users name on any of their posts on the forum to view their profile, and then choosing Show Posts.

The Advanced Search UI is different, but it looks like all the stuff I typically actually used is still there, just organized a bit differently.

^ That's what the profile page looks like for me as well, in both FF and Chrome (Windows 7). Perhaps the profile page layout changes according to your account type on the forum. Or maybe this affects newer accounts only. In any event, something needs to be fixed.

What 'e said.
Plus its too spread out and reducing makes font too small to read.
The NEW suffix is not required.

Following the link (or clicking on my name on the left) leads me to the same page I showed in my attached screenshot (not marko's screenshot). Still can't find any "show posts".

Eyes wide open, and still no Show Posts. No Profile Summary either. I see you have a "Moderate" item on your menu. Try logging on with a regular user account.

There are a pair of fiddly little arrows next to "Modify Profile".  If you click on them the view changes and there then is a fiddly little arrow on the right side of the window near the top.

So, that's weird. You're missing the whole Profile Info section. I am a moderator, but I don't have access to a standard account. But Marko and Brian aren't moderators, and they can still see it.

What happens if you click the little double-arrows Jim was talking about next to Modify Profile on that page? Those should be next to the missing Profile Info section, but...

Clicking the double arrows just turns the main menu items into tabs with drop-down menus (containing the same sub-items that are listed below the main menu items). I'd post another shot but I'm sure you get the idea.

Updated the userstyle to fix a couple of issues that cropped up: https://userstyles.org/styles/131438/jriver-forum

Thanks for your work.

Any chance of a dark theme for dim room/night time viewing.  You know, some dark grey background, maybe a little blue in it to give a sense of space.  Some off white text so its not too bright.  Some splashes of colour, maybe matching some classic jriver colours.  And toned down bright colours for quotes and other text.

I view on a large plasma and other large screens in a dimmed room.  So always go for darker/night time themes for all websites I view on a daily basis.  Using stylish in Opera/Chrome and FF.

An official dark theme would be great to have, but styilish is next best. Maybe one like one or two of the dark jriver themes ?  Black on Black and a more dark grey skin.  Themes we can change at the bottom of the website and will be remembered once logged in.

However that's a lot of work - probably at least a few hours. Changing some font sizes and hiding a few page elements is minor; 10-15 minutes of work.

Yours was set to english_british-utf8. I just changed it to the default english. The utf8 fonts aren't supported yet because it requires large changes to the forum database.
Can you see if the issues have gone away and report back?

Cool, if you find the time.

It would be very good if the JRiver devs made an official forum dark theme once all the other forum updates are done and bugs worked out.

Just a quick update on the missing 'Profile Summary' & 'Show Posts' options.

I have now tried viewing the forum on three different PC's, one running Linux Mint, one running Windows 7 and the other running Windows 10, all with various browsers (Opera, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer) and the results are all the same where there is no 'Show Posts' option.

These all had the 'Show Posts' option before the new look forum was released.

I do hope this can be sorted because it is proving quite difficult to find all my previous posts without that button.
