Restore burn
« on: July 22, 2003, 12:24:04 pm »

Just a small nit.  For some reason Media Center licensing just bumped me out stating my trial was over.  I did a license restore, no problem.

The nit is I've burned most all my restores because of oddities during the Beta periods. (I purchased in Nov, I believe, and went straight to 9.0 beta for certain features).

Not sure there's any "resolution".  I'm just at a loss as to why the licening expires. The most recent change was from 174 to 180.

Any thoughts appreciated.

No.

I run MC on a few PCs (HTPC, "Test bed", Home and traveling).  The laptop is where I lost the license which was surprising has it was the one system that I haven't had to do a restore on since my initial purchase back in Nov.  I try to run only "proven out" software.

When the beta's were in the 90's (I believe) I remember a period of licensing problems where I needed to burn many restores.  So be it, chalk it up to beta.  Same when I brought up my HTPC on XP (many XP and HW issues forced 3 restores...those are on my nickle  :) ).

I haven't touched the config of the laptop since the beginning of the year other than updates to MC and installs of a Logitech camera and Spybot spyware remover software.  That's why I was surprised and thought I'd pass the info on to you.

Hi Tom,

Did you change the system clock?

Any chance it's related to the spyware removal? We have no spyware, I'm just wondering if the removal program is confused or did something.

No change to system clock, etc.  All I can do is play around with the spyware remover and see if my license gets trashed.  When I ran the spyware program, it didn't highlight any J River registry or program elements; only very specific and well-known spyware programs.  I didn't even execute the command to remove the offending spyware.  So while I too was concerned that the spyware program might have done something (and why I highlighted this to you), theorically the spyware program has not "cleansed" anything and should not have caused a problem.

I'll play around a bit, though, and let you know if the license gets trashed this afternoon.

Thanks

I did run, analyze and clean my system using Spybot to see if that had any effect on licensing.  No issues.

I posted this issue more as an FYI in case you see other licensing issues arise as this recent restore seemed very odd.  However, I need no further remediation.  If you'd like me to check anything else out, I'd be happy to do so.

Thanks, as always, for your prompt assistance!

Before the message about your trial being over, did MC display any kind of error message?

If (when?) this happens again, before you do a restore please contact us here on Interact and we can troubleshoot what the problem is.

Your restore counter has been reset to zero.

Thanks!

Update: The next build of MC will have a numeric code in the title bar of that "trial period" dialog you see when the license doesn't work. The next time you have this problem, please jot down that number and post in the forum here.
