DAT file format
« on: July 20, 2003, 03:23:06 am »

I came across a video with a .DAT file extension.

Windows Media Player played it fine, but MC wouldn't open it.  Whatis.com said it's a version of MPG, so I changed the extension to .MPG, and then MC was able to open it and play it.

Maybe MC should recognize files with .DAT extension?

Sam ,

If i am correct .dat files are normally associated with VCD's.

Windows MP will play them if you open them, but not by default (ie double clicking)

It would be good if MC could play them aswell but i suspect the issue is that .dat extensions are also used in some Windows system files so differentiating may be difficult.

Cheers

Correct...  the AVSEQxx.DAT file is the MPEG AV filename convention for a VCD or SVCD.

I wonder why MC is so precise about extensions  - sure, I understand file associations and all...  but once the file is being opened from within MC, isn't there are a way to deduce the content (i.e. video or audio) from the container header?

Can MC play VCDs or SVCDs?

The big problem with dat is that a lot of applications use that extension for data files.  It's an unfortunate choice of names for a video file.  A couple years ago, we imported dat files by default and it created problems.

I understand the import problem...  but if the file is already in the library, why can't MC play it?
