Update Tags (from library) WAV files doesn't work [Solved]
« on: January 30, 2017, 12:06:57 pm »

Hi Guys,
Finally found jriver - glad I did - to play multi-channel WAV (and other) files on my Yamaha Receiver.
Works quite well - not every file type plays, but enough to make it worth writing the tags in my otherwise filename-based library...

Anyway, having written all the tags (a LOT of tags can I tell you!) I found out it wasn't actually doing any tagging in the original WAV files.
So I did some research, and found the two main answers:
"update tags (from library)" doesn't work. Just doesn't touch the file at all. Not read-only file & read-write file share on a server.
The tick box in WAVE/AIFF plugin - also doesn't work, Doesn't touch the original file.

I'd really like to not have to do this huuuuge task again, can anyone help please?
Thanks in advance

What are you using to check the tags?   (Windows, another program?)

There is no tagging standard for .wav.  Windows itself is quite famous for not playing well with wav

Curiously, which file type do you have that JRiver won't play?

Hi Ferday,
I checked with foobar & vlc, and (yes sadly) win explorer "properties".
They all seem to agree the "tag" is blank.

I wrote different info in the foobar editor & "update library (from file)" & it reported the different tage data correctly.
However, adjusting it in jriver and "update tags (from file)"  did not over-write the foobar tag...
In both cases I get a dialog box "1 file updated (0 errors)"

So I don't understand what's not working...all suggestions welcome and gratefully received.

As for some files don't work...when played on Yamaha AV Receiver using its built-in DLNA client, probably not Yamaha supported. Have yet to try all files in both Yamaha and jriver-on-the-pc. Looking better than most dlna servers though.

We do write tags in WAV/AIFF files.  The tags are written into an ID3 chunk.  It may be that the tools you tried do not handle the format we use.  Try using MediaInfo.  I just tried a couple of WAV files.  MediaInfo can read the tags that was written by MC.

WAV files are an anachronism.  WAV has no tagging standard at all.

You could convert to another format if you really wanted to.  But why bother?  MC has the tags in it's database. If you use MC to play back your WAV files, then you'll always have all of the information.

If you have some idea that you want to use these WAV files on other systems, then you've got a decision to make:  Use another format, or perhaps rename these in a way that encodes the metadata that you're interested in.

In the tagging window, click on the top line - should save WAV -length - size - and it will tell you what tag values are in the file. If that reports tag values in the file and the other programs do not, then there is clearly some sort of mismatch.

Don't know if I can help you out, but I have all my tracks in WAV files. for a lot of reasons and the storage space is no cost nowadays. I am so "nerdy" that I want the record label and year of release inbedded with a songtitle. So when ripping an album I do add that info Before ripping in EAC don't know if you can do this in MC.
So my files look like this permanent:

Yellow Submarine - The Beatles - Parlophone 1966
In The Ghetto - Elvis Presley - Rca Victor 1969
Back To Black - Amy Winehouse - Island Records 2008

Now I got the info that are useful to me when playing a track and as I mentioned I can't loose that info because it is permanent added to the track.
When adding my albums there is just album title, artists and genre of album I need to tag in MC and that info have not been an issue for me, it stays there.

The rest of information I need is keept in Another database from collectorz.com where you can add as much info you can imagine. I can search for years, titles, artists, recordlabels and so on for every track I have added.
Well, it takes a bit of time but it was the way I choosed. I'm now up to 45 000 plus titles, the only tracks that is hard to do is Reggae as there is very little info on original Jamaican releases when buying a various artists album with older tunes

So this is my way to store info on WAW files.

Interesting notes, thanks.
I checked with Mediainfo, and it's same as foobar, so at least I'm getting a view of things.
I've written some tag data in foobar & mediainfo confirms it's there.
The info is the same as in jriver if I "Update Library(from tags)", but if I change it in jriver & "update tags (from library)", doesn't work - MediaInfo confirms it's done nothing - but most annoyingly it pops up a dialog box saying "1 file updated 0 failures" - isn't that just naughty? If it doesn't work, should it not reflect it accurately?

The data just is NOT getting from library to tags.
While I appreciate that the library has all the info, that's not the right answer, because let's face it, it's a database, and what do databases do? They corrupt, or they get lost or broken or the PC dies or some other disaster.
No, the right answer is to do what the program says it can & IS doing & write the tags back to the file.
Attached - mediainfo screengrab of it showing the data I added in foobar, I changed this data in jriver & wrote it but it didn't get there.
Is it something to do with it being a 5 channel WAV ?

Really appreciate all the suggestions, keep 'em coming!

Hi Guys,
Not sure where to log this as a "bug" but here's the support info.
The saved log is doing both actions save to tags & read from tags
They are also separated in two different log files, hopefully self-explanatory filenames, if that helps.
Can't see any obvious error messages...

Please excuse my tenacity, but paying for software seems to change the dynamic a little, doesn't it?
Thanks in advance, all help much appreciated.

There is no standard WAV tagging, so it's possible that MC writes one tag, but your other program reads another.  I don't think there is a bug here.

What format are your WAVE files in?  I checked our code and found that we do write tags to most standard WAVE files, but there are a few that we do not.  An example is DTS WAVE file.

EDIT: I see from your screen shot that you do have DTS WAV files.  That explains it.  We handle DTS files differently from PCM files.  I will take another look and see if we can write tags to DTS files as well, or at least change the message and say "Tagging did not work".

Oh what an excellent answer! That certainly explains it.
I did wonder whether the multi-channel aspect may be an influence, which is why I mentioned it in the original question.
I didn't know that "DTS WAV" was the trigger phrase - I do know now!
Thanks for looking at this, much apreciated.

WAV files really are a pain, especially because there are so many "flavors" of WAV files and no real standards for tagging at all.

My advice is for you to convert your WAV files to FLAC. ESPECIALLY those DTS WAV files.  They are one of the strangest audio formats in existence.  They really make no sense at all.  They only exist because of the very unusual (and questionable) format of DTS CDs.

FLAC files of essentially any channel count, and any sample rate, are all easily tagged and supported in many programs including MC.

i normally stay away from the format wars, but i strongly agree with blgentry on this one.  i have converted many DTS-wav into multi-FLAC and it's a very good way to go, with rich tagging support and can be read by almost everything these days.

honestly if i had some need or desire to have the .wav i'd archive them somewhere and have the FLAC for actual usage

Thanks to ferday and blgentry for the suggestions.
I checked the specs of my stuff & it appears to support flac, but in practice the conversion didn't work.

Nice idea though, I'm all in favour of a consistent format across all my media, then I'd know everything worked on everything.
Sadly that's a pipe dream, too many files & too many formats to bother converting.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
I still hold out hope that MC might be able to write tags to DTS WAVs, as they seem to be quite self-consistent...

That sounds like a lazy "I got all this stuff from the Internet and I don't want to mess with it" response to me.

Good luck.
