MC not parsing flac with cue on import
« on: February 20, 2017, 05:59:17 pm »

I imported a single flac file with associated cue file, but MC is not parsing that flac into separate songs. So, MC just shows it as a single 45 minute long flac file instead of the 11 tracks I should be seeing.
Any ideas? (I've already tried manually importing the containing directory, and also removing the directory and re-importing, but the results are the same).
I'm on MC 22.0.59 on Win 10 - 64.

Best,

Make sure you import the CUE and not the FLAC file.

I'm confused. I have both set up on Auto-Import. Turning off Flac wouldn't work well, since almost all my files are flac.
Also, I kind of remember a thread where some hierarchy was explained about when a cue file would be used. E.g., if the individual files were present the cue file was ignored. Is that not the case anymore?

Check the cue file is correctly referencing the flac file.   Quite often cue files will specify their target file as .wav instead of .flac and MC won't import.  If you edit the cue file and change it to .flac, it will then work.

You can import FLAC in most directories, but not in some by editing the directories in auto import settings.

This may have been the problem. Here's a snippet of the cue file:
Code: [Select]
FILE "01. What I See.flac" WAVE
  TRACK 01 AUDIO
    TITLE "What I See"
    PERFORMER "Dirty Projectors"
    INDEX 01 00:00:00
Is this what you were referring to?
(I ended up using CueSplitter to extract the files, but it would be good to know the cause).

No, that entry looks ok.

FILE "01. What I See.flac" WAVE

Quite often I see CUEs of the form

FILE "01. What I See.wav" WAVE

When, in fact the file is a FLAC.  I have to edit those entries to point to the flac file before MC will import.

And, sorry, I'm an idiot, as I do have the solution, but got sidetracked by cue editing for some reason!  :)

The solution is this - import the cue file - MC will always import as a single file...  but you can then split into tracks by using Convert Format, using the options - Convert to same folder / Replace original file on disk and in library.  MC will then split the file for you into individual tracks!

Although, I've just gone back to your original question and see that this may not be the solution for your problem as it only works if MC is showing the tracks, but that doesn't seem to be the case for you.  Sorry!  Stumped.

Thanks. Yes, MC imported the FLAC as one large file and did not use the cue file to separate the tracks (as I think it has done before).
I ended up using cue splitter and then placed the directory and auto-import took over.
I did not think I needed to import the cue and not the flac - I thought MC had logic to deal with it.
Oh, well, again, thanks for your help.

Yeah, you always import the CUE file.

But now you also know the trick for splitting the cue file in future, when there are multiple tracks in it: convert format.

And how to fix "bad" cue files, edit and ensure that .flac is used.

If you can avoid CUE files, you should.  As you've just experienced, CUE file support in MC is not exactly straight forward.

Thank mark_h: I do know more about cue files and dealing with them.

and, yes, blgentry: a lesson learned.

As I typically deal with tracks as opposed to one large rip with a cue, this issue shouldn't dog me too often in the future.

Again, thanks to all for the input.
