Amazon Fire Stick
« on: February 23, 2017, 02:42:58 pm »

Hey everyone,
I don't see a way to email so I'm posting here. I have spent a good hour or two trying to figure out what support, if any, there is for the Amazon Fire Stick as a player. For instance, Plex media's Alexa skill allows me to choose the fire stick as the player so when I issue voice commands it will play but I am not happy with the Plex experience on Fire Stick as you must have the app running (it won't auto launch upon play request) and it was balky. Alexa told me several times she couldn't access the Plex skill now for no apparent reason.

I was wondering if JRiver and the House Band skill could work the same way with the Fire Stick but better. I also have an Echo so the music part alone would be worth it if it works as I've read it does. I can try it out with the trial to see but the Fire Stick or even playing videos/music in a graphical interface to my smart TV (as Fire Stick does with Amazon Prime Music) or to a Google Cast enabled AVR would be a huge bonus. Is there anyone here using the Fire Stick to play music and/or videos with House Band? How did you go about setting it up?

As far as I know, there is no compatibility with the Fire Stick.  The House Band developer has a thread on the Third Party Board here.

I installed Gizmo to my Amazon Fire Stick using an app called Apps2Fire.  Process took only 10 minutes at the most, and initial indication is that it works just fine.  However, I haven't fully played with it, so I will check more this week.

Simple Google search gives the answer: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.koni.appstofiretv&hl=en

You can apparently use that app to install Android apps on the Fire.

Gizmo on the Amazon Fire stick works pretty good, but not perfect.  Actually playing video/music is great, but it doesn't respond well to the Amazon Fire remote.  The play and pause button work fine, but the the fast forward/reverse buttons didn't work for me.  Also, if you happen to stop or quit a video, it doesn't remember your location.  Not a big deal, but could be a problem at times.

At this moment, away from home using our Amazon fire stick, watching a movie from home.  It's nice..... A few changes could make it great.

I agree.  It's now 2019 and this is still the case.  I've gotten Gizmo to play on FireStick, but it won't do anything with the fwd/rwd.  Also, it does not update the play count, so my library cannot tell something has been watched if it was watch on Gizmo on Firestick.

I suppose Gizmo is no longer supported.  I will be trying WebGizmo in a little bit, but I am not hopeful.  If anyone has had any luck, please let me know.

I'm hoping that JRiver for Android in the future will progress to the point where it can access a remote database.

Gizmo is supported.  Panel replaced WebGizmo.

I found this topic in search of how to best listen to my music while I have the Fire TV Stick 4K Ultra HD connected to my Yamaha AV-receiver and and Gizmo on my tablet to access the library on my server.

I managed to install Gizmo on the Fire TV Stick 4K Ultra HD and now can use it to access my music collection.

This video helped to get it installed: https://youtu.be/zuDCwzO2CGw

The app Apps2Fire is available in Google Playstore. The apk for Gizmo is available here: https://m.apkpure.com/de/gizmo/jriver.mediacenter.android
I used Total Commander for Android to install the apk.

The menus of the fire tv stick and Apps2fire have changed since the video has been produced however it's easy to find the respective locations in the new version.

It would be great if one could simply download the Gizmo app from the Amazon store.

Unfortunately, after about 5 years and 5 builds of MC, Gizmo still doesn't work with the most popular medium out there... Firestick (or FireTV).  I've championed this cause for a while, and will throw some of my observations out there, in case someone comes across this.
- Gizmo can be installed (sideloaded) into Firestick, and Play/Pause works, but the rewind, fast forward, and next/previous won't work.  It also does not recall where you left off on videos.
- Panel can be viewed through Amazon Silk, but it's not a great experience on Firestick either, as you're trying to use a mouse in a mouseless environment.
- If you have the MC DLNA/UPNP server going, you can use other players to access it, but these are not great:
    - Kodi has never worked well on any of my 4k Firesticks.  It crashes regularly and doesn't play everything.
    - VLC works well enough to navigate and play videos, and is what I use mostly, but it's not the prettiest interface.

Unfortunately, there are other solutions that do play well with Firestick (Emby, Jellyfin, etc.) but I live and die by my smartlists.

Maybe the answer is as simple as finding a better skin/layout for Panel or Gizmo.  Or maybe I need to stop whining and just go ahead and build a Firestick App specifically for JRiver's API.

I'm open to suggestions, but since I dropped a thread on this years ago with no responses at all, I'm starting to think either not enough MC users use Firesticks, or no one cares.  With a new release each year, and the money from selling new releases each year, you'd think this would at least be addressed, if not resolved.

Why do you need to use a mouse with Panel?  It works on a touchscreen in any browser.

For everyone that still likes to listen to music using Gizmo on the Amazon FireTV stick: It's much easier today to install Gizmo. Just look at this video:

https://youtu.be/COVMeu7j3UY

Just use AppsToFire, modify a few setting on the Fire stick, select the app to copy and install. Done. It worked for me after my FireTV stick had stopped working after an update and I had to buy a new one.
