Cannot play videos on a brand new install
« on: March 26, 2017, 02:06:02 am »

I recently built a new system.  I reinstalled MC22, but I have not been able to play any videos on it.  When I try I get the below error.

Quote
Something went wrong with playback

Details:

Failed to setup video window. (hr=0x80004002)

I've tried everything suggested in the wiki, but nothing works.  Audio plays just fine.  Video plays fine in other apps too.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

The system is about a week old.  It's Windows 10 x64 Pro.

What kind of videos are you trying to play - copy protected perhaps?
If so, do you have AnyDVD HD installed?

When you says the videos play fine in "other apps", do you mean they play on the same computer - or they play fine on another machine?

As far as I'm aware, I don't have anything driver-based that might be interfering with MC22.  My library is composed of .avi files (xvid) only.  None of them are copy-protected.

Good question.  I mean that Windows video player can play everything in my library that I've tried on this same machine.

Was MC able to download video components?  Try playing other video types.

Antivirus or other "security" software?

Whats your setting under "Video -> Video Mode" set to, and did you try any of the others there? (primary Red October Standard and Red October HQ)

A failure to setup the video window sounds weird to me, never seen that error out before.

Nope.  In fact, MC22 was the first thing I installed from a vanilla Windows install other than my backup software (that uses VSS so there's no driver conflict.)

I've been trying all those settings.  Red October (both) won't play at all.  If I use Windows Merrit Based files do play.  However, the resulting video playback looks really grainy s and unwatchable

Yes I do.  There are 16 files in total there.

Double check your video drivers.

I did.  There is no device listed as malfunctioning or in error in the device manager.

Go to the manufacturer's site and find the driver.  Download and install it.

Is the machine itself new?

Yes.  The machine was just built a week ago, then shipped to me friday.  I downloaded the drivers from the manufacturer, installed them, and I'm still having the same issue.  No other app seems to have this video issue.

This I think. Windows 10 by default has Windows Defender and Windows Firewall turned on. I suspect one or the other is blocking the download of components MC requires to play the videos, or some action MC is trying to take. Although as you have the LAV files, maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, take a look through http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Windows_Defender and this http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Security_Software to get Defender under control, and turn off the Windows Firewall for a while to see if MC downloads anything on playback. i.e. The message "MC is installing components."

That's a good suggestion.  I disabled Defender (I wanted to anyways as I prefer something else) and disabled the firewall.  I also deleted the file located at
C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 22\Plugins\lav.  Then I tried to play a video.  I did get the message about MC installing components this time, and the 16 files were readded to the "lav" directory.  However, the video failed to play and I got the same message.

Coincidentally, I have the same video card as you RoderickGI; NVidia MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X, 6GB w/driver 372.54

Hmmm, you may need to clear and then run a log and have a look in it to see if there are any clues.

But before that, have you tried just reinstalling MC over the top of the current installation, and also rebooting a few times (say three) after the installation? I have found that sometimes fixes strange problems, particularly under Windows 10, with its enforced updates. If you aren't using an Administrator account, perhaps try installing when logged on under such an account, or run the installation package using the right click, "Run as Administrator" function. Neither should make a difference, but may.

I solved it.   I don't know why this worked, but it did.  I uninstalled then reinstalled my graphics drivers, this time not accepting the default install but unselecting the 3d components.  That seems to have solved my issue.  A regular reinstall didn't do it, but this did for whatever reason.
