Synology MC22
« on: April 03, 2017, 08:11:10 am »

Hi guys,

I know that this has been asked before but it wouldn't hurt to ask again.

Since QNAP removed support for MC21 and MC22 is only available by installing manually would it be possible to create a synology package.

Synology are starting a new campaign to try and get more apps available for the platform and I'm sure others would be grateful if MC22 could run natively on their NAS.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/developer

Please can you consider it.

Thanks
John

Since I'm also interested in this, I bumped a thread: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,87159.msg760796.html#msg760796

I have trouble understanding why we would jump through hoops again to get our software to run on NAS storage devices, which are just specialized computers.  I don't see an advantage over a general purpose computer like a Linux machine or even a JRiver Id.

I'm feeling a little bit grouchy about the experience of getting it working with the QNAP devices and then having them throw us overboard.  We spent about a month of time on it.

When I am away from home and want to stream my music from home, I need to start my computer at home that has MC installed. Since my NAS is online 24/7, both the NAS and the server computer are online then. If we'd have a synology package, there would be no need for another MC server being online.
Of course I could buy a PC, install some HDD's in it and run MC server on it. But I find it not very logical to use my NAS 24/7 AND another computer for serving my music.

And the same thing could happen with Synology too, sadly.

Do you know why the QNAP guys threw you overboard? If so, did you try to contact Synology in order to find out if that might also happen with them?

How about Docker?  It looks as if Synology and Qnap support it

Related on this forum - https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,109810.0.html

Personally I run mediacenter 22 on a debian VM on a NAS.  At some stage in the next couple of months I'll be upgrading my NAS to a version that supports docker & will give it a try then

regards,

Steve

We have no plans to do anything for any NAS at this time.
