Hi,

My power went out. When I restarted the PC, MC21 was jittery and super slow, I mean watch a frame at a time slow, both the theater view interface and playing back video. Windows Media player plays back the videos fine, everything else works, MC21 ...no luck.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall, same problem.

This PC is only hooked up to a TV and is a dedicated video player. There is no antivirus. The system settings have not been touched or changed and no updates.

My guess is some data file containing MC21 video settings became corrupted. Reinstalling failed to restore whatever it is. I did select to delete the registry files.

It is running Windows 7 Enterprise, x64, 8gb RAM, SSD C:, i3-4340 3.6 ghz cpu, spinning app and data drives.

Hi,

I have been hammering away at this obsessively. I finally decided to check the bios settings. I discovered the video memory was set to the lowest setting. I increased it to the highest, 1024. That actually made the problem worse. So I went half way, 512, and the video was actually watchable. It is still jittery but great improvement. I am going to mess with these parameters some more but I have a sneaking suspicion that I have caused some of the problem through hours of tinkering. I am using Red October now. I tried switching to RO HQ but everything went screwy. I think I need to know more about what I'm doing to make that work. 

Edit: I didn't get better results with further modifications of the video memory. It was better but glitchy and tearing. I found a post regarding enabling Areo. I had disabled it as part of my troubleshooting. Re-enabling it got rid of the tearing but the super stuttering is back.

Edit: Disabled Aero again but I'm back to stuttering and hanging no matter what. I think I might have bad hardware. I'm buying a new video card.

I put a brand new video card in it and I'm right back to square one, terrible, choppy, jittering video. No improvement whatsoever. In fact it's as bad as when I started.

I haven't seen any evidence of a problem with the Power supply.

Everything else works fine. If all I was doing was spreadsheets I wouldn't notice a difference. It's only when I try to watch a video, which is all this PC exists for, so bad problem to have.

It's bizarre, before the power went off it worked perfectly.

Edit: Strangely Windows Media Player is back to functioning perfectly. MC21 totally choking. Even the theater view menu is dogging it. DPC Latency Checker reports no issue.

The new video card is a GT 730.

I reran the diagnostics with the new video card...

CPU and memory seem ok.



Looks like a lot of C: activity even though the app is installed on E: and the video file lives on D:.

It must be paging a lot.

When you don't receive an answer, it often means that nobody knows.

Those benchmarks don't look right.  If you have an i3, I'd expect something like 2500 for the JRMark.

Did you try both Red October Standard and HQ?

Try toggling the video setting for hardware acceleration.

Take a look at the Weird Problems thread (link in my signature) for ideas.

What doesn't look right in the metrics, I mean does anything in particular stand out?

Your JRMark is way too high.

Try reinstalling the video driver.

Something is definitely up with the JRMark. The math section looks about right, its typically the lowest in the entire test, but the other two are *way* too high.
I have no idea what could cause such odd numbers.

Re-installing the crucial drivers can definitely not hurt.

Okay, but I have to say this...I just replaced the video card, yesterday, thinking it might have been bad. So new video card, new drivers.

Maybe I just need to back everything up and reinstall the OS. About 9tb of data. That's going to be a big job. I was hoping to avoid that. I suppose I should have a back up any way.

With all that disk activity on C: I thought I would move the page file to D:. Made no difference whatsoever. Which makes sense, with 8gb of Ram. Still hitting the C: awfully hard. MC21 must be doing something on the C: even though its installed on another drive.

Looks like it's the LAVSoft web companion log generating all the activity.

Damn, it's a virus, or malware or something. The thing is on the internal network but it's not in a domain. Still that must be it!

Looks like others have gotten it from downloading codecs. I installed K-lite while I was beating my head against the wall this weekend.

So I'm guessing the power outage messed up my video memory settings, as I had discovered. Along the way while I was trying a million different things to resolve this I installed K-Lite. It was infected. The PC isn't protected so it got easily hammered.

Thats my theory anyway. 

Edit: Errrr Lavasoft is malware detection?....which I never installed. It must be impersonating.

Well, it was infected, and it was thrashing the C: drive. Now it's clean and still choking. I'm going to try and repair Windows tonight and see what happens.

I figured I would finish this story.

Recap:

1. After power outage video became painfully choppy
2. Tried every setting under the sun, no success
3. Reinstalled JRiver, no success
4. Tried installing K-Lite on the suggestion I had corrupt codecs, no success
5. Investigation revealed video bios settings had been changed to lowest RAM settings
6. Setting video memory settings created a nominal improvement
7. Bought and installed a new video card, performance became even worse
8. Found I got a virus from K-Lite, made matter worse as it was thrashing the C: drive
9. Cleaned PC, no video improvement
10. Reinstalled operating system, all problems resolved

It was a long and painful journey. Thank God it's over. The thing is working better than ever now.
