Starting with the basics, jremote will show everything that is in the mc library as long as the media network option is enabled. What can you see/access in jremote?

xubuntu lts 14.04 32 bit, running mc22.0.36 as anything later doesn't work properly over vnc. using linux mc22 as media server to windows mc22 last version / jremote on ipad.

It's a checkbox in the Options for Media Network.

On your laptop, using MC's standard view interface (the computer screen), you should be able to see any music that JRemote can see.  Do you see your external disk songs listed in MC's standard view?  I'll bet you don't.  If that's the case, import them using Tools > Import .
