Best Way To Delete Duplicates
« on: May 03, 2017, 08:13:37 am »

Bear with me as I am new to MC.
I have most of my music on a synology NAS originally uploaded through iTunes. MC has found many many duplicate songs. I can see them through a smart playlist. When I go to delete them, they always come back. Should I be using a different method to delete? Which of the three options should I choose? If I choose to delete to the recycling bin what does that actually do? Should my auto-import be configured differently? I'm pulling my hair out here. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I've looked through most of wiki but can't seem to find anything specific to my problem. Does anyone know of any video tutorials?
Thanks again

Welcome to the forum.  You are probably importing from a network share and a mapped drive that points to it.  Set up your auto-import settings to ignore one.

Thank you for the quick reply!
I will change those auto import settings.
Can you also please define the three options when deleting a track? I'm not at my computer but it was, send to recycling bin, delete from drive and one more. How do these effect the deletion process?
Thanks again

One is a total, permanent delete.

One deletes, but moves the file to the recycle bin.

One just removes the file from MC's library.

Thanks again.
So, the first option will totally delete that track? Completely off the NAS?
Sorry, I guess I'm a little slow.

Yes.  Totally gone.

Shift Delete and Delete are different.

Try them on a few files you don't want.

If you're just cleaning up duplicates, just do the soft delete (remove from MC's library).

Thanks again Jim. That has cleared things up. Works on my IMac. I understand the different ways to delete, but...
When I go to my iPad or iPhone those tracks are still showing. They are gone from my iMac but still show and play (dlna) from my iPad and iPhone. Hmmm. I can't figure it out

Thanks for your patience.  Now I'm even more confused. I restarted everything. All the tracks I deleted came back. And I deleted multiple tracks all three ways. Two specific tracks I permanently deleted. They are back. Odd

Any ideas what I may be missing? Auto import only looks at one folder. I have checked to ignore preciously deleted files. I can't figure it out.

Please post a screen shot showing some of the duplicates.  Make sure that we can see the full filename of the duplicates in the screen shot.  That should give us some clues to go on.
