I tried different resolutions (all square), to no avail, and jpg and png and low and high-quality jpegs (smaller file size).

This post says that the size limit is either 100x100 or 150x150, but neither work, it just accepts it and then says I have no avatar set when it refreshes.

You can't add HTTPS links as an avatar in SMF 2.0, without modification to the forum software. It is a SMF limitation.

Host it somewhere like Imgur and edit the direct link to http:// instead of https://

You can use HTTPS avatars now (also the forums are fully HTTPS too).
