« on: July 08, 2017, 02:33:09 am »

Why not? I have friends that would buy this to connect to my library

I like the lateral thinking.

Not my forté but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a legal copyright angle to consider, even if it would be virtually impossible to monitor / enforce. Dunno? Just wondering why it's not commonly done. Maybe it is and I'm unaware..  ;)

As long as they sell a client+server the copyright issue stay the same. I maybe do not get the point. I can still distribute contents using web gizmo. The Client is just better

Allowing a friend to play your music is probably covered by "fair use" (in the United States).  Two or three friends, even.  At some point it ceases to be fair use, probably when the access is unlimited or the people playing are unrelated.  This is just speculation on my part.

The idea of allowing friends to purchase for a reduced price is interesting though.  How much of a price reduction would it take to get your friends to buy?

Doesn't webgizmo let you do this already?

IMO, a fair price for the client should be 1/3 of the full package price given the features and the complexity of the server. But I am a technician so probably non a good marketer ;)

And yes, I mean fair use (up to 3-4 friends)

BTW, If I want to be not fair I can just give them my ftp credentials ;)

We've resisted making multiple products from the one we have, just to keep things simpler.  One product is both client and server.  I think your proposal would require a major change in what we offer, and it's not clear it would bring significant results.

Should not be too much difficult ... like MusiCHI does. Just ship a single file with differente license files ...

BTW, it was just my 0.0005 cents ;)

JRemote sure does

So essentially IMO this product already exists

Both JRemote and webgizmo is pretty far from a fully featured "client" in what it can do and how it works. So I disagree that the product already exists. If that new product is worth creating though, is another question.

Can't see the point.

The product is so cheap inexpensive that a cut down version would be likely to have so few sales that it wouldn't be worth JRiver time to do the cutting down.
