CD data base problem when upgrading from 22 to 23
« on: August 19, 2017, 10:41:18 pm »

After upgrading from MC22 to MC23 you can see from the attached photos that the images for the CD data base are lost. But switching back to MC22 they are still there.

It is most important to me to maintain the CD data base to match that of the ripped files in text and artwork. I have had to re-rip my music many times and being able to just insert the CD and have the correct artwork and most recent editing to the text be use.  My collection is over 6,000 CD's to correcting the entire data base is a multi year project.

Please review the problem and make suggesting to re-attaching the artwork.

If the cover art is not stored in the file (optional in MC), you can set the directory where the cover art is actually located, then right click on files and choose "Quick find..."

Thanks. But that is what I have been trying. But the retrieved artwork is not being stored in the CDA data file. This is what I need for when I need to re-rip CD's. To the flac file is OK.

Interestingly enough, in MC22 this does work.

Maybe I have to keep MC22 for ripping purposes. IF we can not make this work, the only way is to select each CD individually, copy the artwork to the clipboard and the past to CDA file. But for over 6,000 CD's you must agree that is a huge project. Ugh!!!

Seems like a lot of that energy could be going into not having to re-rip CD's in the first place

- Did you try making a fresh backup in 22 then restoring in 23?
- Are you sure all of the possible cover art settings are the same in 22 and 23?
- are the cover art directories the same?
- are you storing cover art in file (when possible)?

I don't use cda files so I'm not sure how they respond to tags

When you talk about "CDA data file", you must mean the file you see on a physical CD.  It never has cover art.  Only after the disc has been ripped does MC look for cover art.  Your FLAC files, for example, would have art.

CDA is just a shortcut with indexing information for the tracks on the CD. This means .cda files contain no audio or support any ID3 metadata support.

I'd recommend ripping CDs to a lossless format, like FLAC or APE. These do support ID3 metadata, including album art.

I have migrated from MC19 to now MC23. and in the past all my data was transferred without much ado and minimum effort. I have had to move all the saved artwork from the "Folder: C\Users\Harroun\AppData\Roaming\J RIverr\media Center 22\CoverArt\" to "Folder: C\Users\Harroun\AppData\Roaming\J RIverr\media Center 23\CoverArt\" for example each time upgrading.

I tried to use the same folder for both MC22 and MC23, but the program will not allow this.

I am ripping to flac files and embedding and storing artwork in the flic files.

Now both MC22 and MC23 have all the same artwork files in their specific folder and the library file is copied over to the new version.

Take a close look at my submitted photo with from the MC22 window. No CD is in the attached drives. but the library file shows all the text data as I have entered and matches the flic file, and the artwork is also attached to the CDA data. This is working very nicely as when the CD is inserted and ripped, when finished all the text and artwork is automatically included.

To date keeping the CDA data and the flic data mirrored is a very simple task. Highlight both versions of the track (CDA and flic) and in the "TAG" window type in the corrections. Vola my data is intact. A new copy will always have the right artwork and text. From time to time I find a file with bad ripping and re-ripping is a very simple process. Should the ultimate disaster strike. (this recently almost happened) while time consuming, cycling all the CD's back through as long as the image files and the library file is backed up, I am good to go.

Very often when listening to my music I spot errors and correct on the fly.

My project of CDtext and artwork is about 15 years old and I take extreme care to protect all the work. I am not willing to start all over again and be 75 years of age would not live long enough to do that. In the beginning I used Nero and the user data base kept my text data. Now I am depending on J River to do the same.

Egg on face. Have just found my problem.

Had been experimenting with the idea of putting the image files on the cloud so I would have a back there and also I have a back up computer, so if I wish to use that computer, both would be working on the same set of files. Logical thing I would think.

It did not work as I could not direct MC23 or 22 to the cloud files. I failed to check and what happened I moved the files to the cloud when I had thought I was copying them and for the time being they would be on both locations.

Just now I would trying to see if I could find a specific image file on the local directory only find out there were only 4 images instead of the 6000+ that are normally there.j

Sorry, sorry.

I normally make the library back ups to the cloud and can restore to the back up computer with ease.

So, how about a suggestion for the new version of MC. Allow us to specify a directory anywhere for the storage of the image files. This will facilitate back-up procedures greatly. Right now if one does not do a manual effort, danger lurks about.

Sir, every time I have tried to change it, in time I get an error message, there was a problem moving files, and I am back to the default location. Unless it's the large number of files I have and some are rather large sized.

Regards, Harroun.

my location is Thailand and I need to sleep now.

Set the folder location where you want it and then use Explorer to copy the files there.

That is what I was trying to do. But I set the folder, and the files are being transferred without any further ado on my part. That turns out why I could not get the artwork before. I did not know the all the image files were being moved already to the new location.

Anyway I have to be out of town for a few days. We can continue later when I return.
