Pops and clicks
«
on:
September 19, 2017, 01:19:10 pm »
I have random issues with pops between tracks and sometimes faint pops during the first few seconds of a new track starting. I say random, because this doesn't happen with every album, but more often than not. Will using this new feature have any effect on this issue?
Thx

A DAC can do that when switching formats. You can try the MC option to play leading silence or try forcing everything to the same format in DSP Studio > Output settings.

I have tried the leading silence thing, didn't help. All my music is FLAC, so no switching formats.

Are they all the same type of FLAC file?
Did you try adjusting the buffer size?

By formats, Jim means bit-depths and sample rates (e.g. 16-bit 44.1 kHz or 24-bit 96 kHz). Some DACs will pop and click when changing from one bit-depth/sample rate to another. Example being playing a 16-bit 44.1 kHz FLAC file then playing a 24-bit 96 kHz FLAC file. That's why resampling everything to the same bit-depth/sample rate works around the pops and clicks.
My DSD DAC will pop/click when I change from playing back any PCM FLAC file to playing a DSD file. It's normal with some DACs.

Even if this was happening, it won't happen between tracks on the same album. All the same format.
Thx

Some are FLAC files downloaded from friends, some are ALAC converted using Foobar. Doesn't seem to make any difference, I can't find a common denominator.
I have played with the buffer size, but I will check the settings tonight.
Thx

What device are you playing to? Are you using WASAPI, ASIO, or something else?
Do you get clicks between tracks on the same album? Do you get clicks while a track is playing, or only in between?

I am playing to a Chromecast Audio device using Hificast as a controller. JRiver is set up using WASAPI.

So it's a network based renderer. That pretty much means that it's a networking problem. Someone who knows more about that might have more suggestions. Maybe in the Media Network forum.

You might try playing to something other than the Chromecast. I'm not sure how solid they are. I've had trouble in the past.
