Downloading V23 Issue
« on: November 23, 2017, 02:27:50 am »

Morning, well it is here!. I previous posted this question and got no response.

I paid to upgrade to V23 a while back, had previously tried to install and it wouldnt, so I just gave up, im really not sure what the issue is, but I tried again last night to down V23 for 64 bit windows. Download kicked of normally the extraction dialogue box showing then when at 100% it flips to a blank black square in the middle of the screen and it freezes and goes no further. If you put the mouse pointer on the black box 2 words are highlighted one saying agreement the other next, can anyone help me out with this please.

Ive been using JR since V16 upgrading as it moves on but have never had this sort of hassle, frustrated would be an understatement.

This reads like you are trying to install from the internet source

Have you tried to download and then install, anything could interfere on a live install, anti virus , connection issues etc.

Have I got it right?

I install all updates that come with no issues

Ok ive tried every which way to get V23 installed, by pure coincidence and friend who also has JRiver was visiting me last night when i was trying to sort this problem out, he said, you must be doing something wrong etc etc. I disabled the firewall on my bullguard software and tried 3 or 4 times to install V23.

On every occasion its doing the same thing. Once it finishes extracting files, black blank square in the middle of the screen and it goes no further.

Ive had no issues installing V22 which im using currently so am at a complete loss as to why i cant get V23 up and running.

Any thoughts anyone?

I agree with Jim, sounds like an antivirus app is quarantining everything (it's a false positive).

What I'd recommend trying is temporarily uninstalling the antivirus app and see if Media Center will install correctly then. Disabling the antivirus application might not be enough.

If you are using MC22 now then you must be using the 32bit version.

So here is a link to a zipped copy of the latest Public release of the 32bit version of MC23.0.94: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AE8KH39qCkz1gQE

Download that, unzip it, and install it. You will need to go through the upgrade process properly. i.e. Backup your Library in MC22 and restore it in MC23 as a minimum. Search for help on the forum. You will then have MC23.

If that doesn't work your security software (or the security software built into Windows, Defender) is stopping the process. If the software doesn't work, same thing; Security Software. Address that problem. From then on you will need to get updates from JRiver. If updates don't work; Security Software.

There are many discussions about security software and the things it unintentionally does to MC. You haven't said what version of Windows you are using, what security software you are using, what browser(s) you have tried, or anything else about your environment, so it is a bit hard to give you a specific answer to the problem.

If you do use Windows Defender, this is a current topic about taming it: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114101.0.html

PS: The copy I uploaded to OneDrive is a clean copy I just downloaded from JRiver, I promise.

Firstly thanks for getting back to me, however its a fail. Just to cover things im using windows 8 64bit.

I completely disabled my bullguard antivirus software and nothing same black blank screen after MC start to extract files then just hangs. Im not using windows defender its disabled.

How can I have no issue downloading V22 on the same PC, and for that matter every other version of JR back to 16 previously and now this.

That on top of the fact the when I kick off V22 it wont even look at the Chord Qute dac is just bought

I'm sorry maybe i'm a complete idiot, but this makes no sense at all.

As a test, uninstall the AV software.

It's common that the same antivirus software will work with one version (or even one build) and not with another.  Antivirus software is not very reliable.

I agree with Jim. If this happens;

black blank screen after MC start to extract files then just hangs.

Then it is very likely that your Bullguard Antivirus is blocking the extraction of files. Several people with different Antivirus solution reported MC23 triggered a response, while MC22 did not. It is a false positive that the Bullguard need to sort out, or you need to tell the software to ignore MC and its installation program.

You could try scanning the installation program you downloaded and see if Bullguard reports any problems. If it doesn't, try to install again. If it does, can you tell it to ignore the problem and let the application run anyway?

If none of that works, try as Jim suggests and completely uninstall Bullguard just to test the installation process. Once MC is installed, and you reinstall Bullguard, it may detect MC and you may have the chance to tell Bullguard to allow MC.

Sadly the saga continues.

So just to update what ive done. Followed your suggestions removed bullguard antivirus software from the pc, then tried to install v23 from the zip file link supplied.

Again it started the file extraction process, then hung again and a black square appeared on screen as before and itll go no further. So i decided to go into the program files and unistall v23,and it wont unistall and im gettin the blank screen appearing.

V22 is running without a hitch and im at a complete lose what to do next.

The one thing i do know is Bullguard cant be the issue with regards to blocking v23 and stopping it running. I also check the files allowed thro bullguards firewall its showing v22 and v23 as Allowed. ?

Very strange.

Does the black square have a name at the top of the window? Like JRiver Media Center or similar. It sounds like the installation package is still getting stuck.

Does the Windows Task Manager show what it is that is running? Does it show anything obvious using % CPU that is also running, which may be interfering with the MC installation?

You are using Windows 10 I assume? So Defender will be running now if Bullguard is uninstalled. I wonder whether it was Defender Firewall or Antivirus that was blocking it all along? If so there is a thread around here discussing putting exceptions into Defender... But I don't want to go there yet.

When you get the black square, if you press enter, wait a bit, press enter, wait a bit, press enter, does anything happen? I'm wondering if the installation is actually running, but the display is just blocked for some reason. Does the Windows Task Manager show the Media Center installation is using CPU?

But then you get a blank screen trying to uninstall MC23? You should uninstall MC through the Control Panel or the new Windows 10 Apps & Features function, rather than through Program Files, if I understand what you meant here.

Don't use a zip file to install.  Download the install package from the Download Page or from the MC23 for Windows board here and execute it.

Did you reboot a couple of times after uninstalling the AV software?

Thanks for getting back to me guys.

Ok the black screen has no name,

Yes ive already tried hitting the return key waiting a bit etc etc, no change

Im running windows 8 64bit (windows defender as previously stated is not running)

The zip file i used was at the suggestion of RoderickGI

Im also a bit concerned that I cant unistall what there of V23 from the program files and if i try to the unistall its eventually just hangs and the blank screen appears.

The original download i took was from the download page as i always do, result on kicking of the install process is was the same issue.

For what it was worth i ran a full virus scan last night and it came back clean as a whistle.

A friend who is a IT software Support engineer suggested i try Revouninstaller to get rid of what there of V23 (he said this usually works). I presume MC dont have an uninstall tool ( he said it may be worth asking)

Hopefully if i can uninstall whats there of v23 and start with a clean sheet i can try reinstalling the latest version of 23.

This is so frustrating as ive had the odd glitch here and there with MC over the years, but by and large especially when installing new software versions which i pretty much do as they become available, the sail thro the install process. As for the PC its sitting on, its used for nothing other than MC duties, and the odd and i me very infrequent look at the internet. ( ive a tablet for those duties)

I will also take a look at the cpu usage to see if anything crops up there.

Regards

Rob

The uninstall won't work until you have a successful install.

This is probably an antivirus problem or similar.  If you have another machine, please try it, using the same install file.

Use the files from JRiver now as Jim suggests. I just suggested that because it sounded like you were getting a corrupted download from JRiver, which could have been associated with a firewall or Antivirus on your system. Downloading a known good copy from another site may have helped. Obviously, it didn't.

In Windows 8 can you completely turn off Windows Defender Antivirus and Firewall? That may help to finish the install.

If Defender is still running, maybe you need to tame it. Have a read through https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114101.msg789355.html#msg789355. That is for Windows 10, but you will get the idea.

Well looks like I've got lucky.

I'm still not sure why, after repeated attempts to get v23 thro, checked windows firewall etc etc etc,

Everytime I tried to turn windows firewall off it just turned itself back on, so I gave up and requested a new download code to try that, which I used still not luck, still the black screen, hit the return key as suggested and it  just keep going back to try and extract files then back came the black screen box.

By this point I was pretty much giving up, as I moved the mouse down over the black box in the middle of the screen i happened to left click the mouse which highlighted in blue a bunch of text relating to the software agreement.

So i thought hang on what if its there and i just cant see it, lowered the mouse to the bottom right hand corner thinking maybe there might be an ok button hidden. Couple of clicks on the mouse for luck and up come the 3 pictures window (which i know means its downloading) seconds later up comes V23.

AT LAST. i dont know how, why etc but its there and its running all files intact etc etc.

Thanks to everyone for there input, assistance, suggestions and advice.

Best regards

Rob

That's likely to be a video driver problem.  It's not an MC problem.

Good news to hear you succeeded.
