cpu usage [Solved]
« on: November 25, 2017, 08:28:37 pm »

I know this has come up from time to time, but after searching, I can't seem to come up with the relevant links.

I'm running MC 23.0.84, 64 bit. As soon as I open MC, the CPU usage skyrockets. Right now, minimized, it's 2.310 k per Taskmaster. There are substantial lags and hanging when I attempt to perform basic tasks, even with the tag updating function turned off. I've run through some of the other suggestions - including building thumbnails in the background - and nothing seems to help. I do have a very large library, 80% lossless and some SACD and other large files. I'm running Bitdefender av, but have made exceptions for Media Center.

I'm nowhere near as technically advanced as many other commentators, so pls forgive the imprecision in my references, I'm a long-time music collector (and long time JRiver user) who would welcome any tips you can provide.

It still could be the antivirus software.  You could add exceptions for media.  There is no reason to check media files.

Thanks Jim - I did that in Bitdefender, excluded every audio and video/photo extension identified to MC. When I reopen the program, it behaves well for the first few minute, but esp. when I'm adding Notes or otherwise adjusting the tag data, it quickly bogs down. There is a very distinct lag between the time I move my cursor to the file entry and the time MC allows me to highlight it, particularly when I'm trying to simultaneously modify tags or metadata for a group of files en masse.

Right now, having been at rest for a while, virtually all of the physical memory is being utilized. When I close the program, that is reduced by 50%. There's a more modest reduction in over-all CPU usage.

I can adjust the demand on the system when I don't adjust the tags as database info changes, but not completely, and that creates an extra task in going back to store changes when I'm done cleaning up the library.

Because of my storage array, I'd expect some modest response issue, but this builds to the point where the program barely functions when I've been working 30 minutes or so. (The library resides on NAS and 2 external drives.)

FWIW, here's system info from a day or so ago, with the program open, truncated for easier reading. I'm sure I'm overlooking something but would appreciate the help in identifying what it is:

My guess is it's still building thumbnails AND analyzing audio in the background, so that's probably why your CPU usage is high. Make sure you've fully disabled both features.

i am running latest jriver 64, on windows 10 with Bitdefender Total Security ... seems fine (but i dont have large library like yours ... more focus on movies)

In addition to excluding media folders in Antivirus settings (which i dont think makes much difference cause not all my media folders are there due to my laziness) ... I also put all executables in /jriver/media center 23/ in Whitelist for Advance Threat Defence setting (mc23.exe, media center 23.exe, media editor.exe, packageinstaller.exe) ... I think that's what made the difference for me ... Advance Threat Defence seems to keep tabs on all running processes, especially when they try to access disk ... excluding mc from that seems to work for me ... good luck

Yeah, and excluding MC's executable files there will also prevent the ntdll.dll BSOD too. :D

i also dont exclude my media by file type ... but by location ... as seen in picture

filtering each file access to see its extensions to determine if it needs scanning seems more resource intensive than determining need for scan from location (can be argued less secure ... but might as well stop using PC for total protection lol)

Thnx folks - tij, I thought about excluding by location, but was concerned that I might be inadvertently downloading dirty files, so opted for extensions. I'll try adding the locations as well. I'll also disable thumbnails and analyzing. That caught my eye too. It's obvious that something is continuing to run, as problems build the longer I stay open.

Search for Bitdefender in the antivirus thread:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,86096.0.html

Several problems there.

It was Bitdefender. I uninstalled it, added Norton and it seems to behave properly ATM. No matter what I did to Bitdefender, I couldn't tame it.

Thnx for the advice and guidance.
