DSD Issues
« on: October 17, 2017, 09:33:37 am »

I really like the sound quality of the 64 bit version but I am having issues with DSD and DSF bitsreaming.  My DACs are LH Labs Pulse X Infinity and Grace m9xx.  They both worked fine with MC20 32 bit.  I can hear faint sound coming out if I turn up the volume.  Sometimes if I force the output to DSD over Dop in the DSP Studio I can play DSF but not DSD.  I'm very confused.

I'm not familiar with these DACs but if they use drivers supplied by the vendor I believe you'll need to use the 64bit versions if they are available.. .

ASIO4ALL isn't true ASIO, it's just a wrapper for kernel streaming.

If ASIO isn't an option (due to lack of 64-bit ASIO drivers) then WASAPI or kernel streaming (without using ASIO4ALL) is what would be recommended.

I’m using wasapi now. The volume control doesn’t work under dsf. But the sound quality is stunning. Why would dsf work but iso wouldn’t.

Bitstreaming means the bits are sent directly to the dac without any modification, including changing the volume. For these types of files, volume has to be changed by the dac/pre-amp/amp. That is how bitstreaming works.

Try right clicking the speaker icon next to the volume slider and select "Enable Volume When Bitstreaming".

Try right clicking the speaker icon next to the volume slider and select "Enable Volume When Bitstreaming".

Pretty sure that only works with a very select group of DACs whose drivers allow the volume change information to be passed along to the DAC.

True. Didn’t work at all. I’m using generic wasapi now.

Hi,
I had a similar issue when I migrated from .32 to .64.
In the end I managed to resolve it by uninstalling the dac, restarting, installing the dac driver again and restarting once again.

This actually sounds like the problem I have with DSD bitstreaming when using ASIO.
DSD bitstreaming requires system volume to be at 100% or else I get very faint playback, static, or silence.
Media Center has an option which sets system volume to 100% automatically when using WASAPI, but it is missing from the ASIO options.

By system volume do you mean the slider at the top of the menu or the digital volume of the DAC.

Hi,
I believe he means the slide at the top of the menu.

Somehow I cannot make it work this time. The “usual installing uninstalling driver tricks” don’t work,

Still not working. Guess I’m going to have to wipe the machine and start over. I only have mc23, fidelizer, and audiophile optimizer on it anyways.

Try running without Audiophile Optimizer and Fidelizer.

Actually audiophile optimizer cannot be uninstalled so I have to try a clean install. Pita really because my original os was windows 8. Hoping w8 to w10 upgrade is still free.

AFAIK, you can still upgrade from Windows 8.x to Windows 10 for free by taking a Windows 8.x key and activate it on Windows 10.

Either the volume control in JRiver set to System Volume, or accessed via the taskbar / volume keys.

Hi,
This time in Windows, in Settings/sound settings, the default device and communication device was JRiver and not Speakers(Dac).
I set the Dac as default and dsd working fine now.
Thanks,

Yep, it was.
I hadn’t installed it for a few versions and I did it the other day.
I didn’t think it would stop dsd working?,

Hi,
I was in contact with ProJect (my DAC manucfaturer) about this dsd issue and I was told Win10 had changed the way external drivers have to be signed and that they were working on a new driver.
Yesterday they sent me the new driver and dsd is back.
