very slow import to library
« on: November 07, 2017, 06:22:01 pm »

I have MC23 master license.
One copy on apple airbook  via wifi.  (I know potential issue for imports, so...)

One copy (now) on PC via cat 5 cable, with anitivirus software OFF.

brand new QNAP NASD  with only 4000  FLAC files on it.  on Cat 5 cable to my DAC / amp.
2TB SSDs

Importing, or even updating my  library is EXTREMELY slow. on BOTH devices.
library is on the local HD (solid state with lots of ram)
I have monitored local syst resources while importing, and see no local bog.
Problem occurs on BOTH wifi or cat 5 cable.
I have copied to and from the NASD  with incredible speed, just migrating BIG files / folders.
(NASD and connectivity are very fast)

I have read other posts with same frustrations.
I cannot attribute it to any one thing based on above info.

NEW ideas?
I am not a super user, or code savvy guy,
but I know how to troubleshoot and use common sense :)

Try using local files on both computers, just as a test.

Antivirus software can cause problems, even when disabled.  What do you use?

Turn off audio analysis.

I will, but as another user said, it tends to import the 1st 1500 files or so, then hang on each file thereafter,
so I will need to move a quantity of files to test.

As for AV software, my mac is guilty of same issue, so between that fact and turning the PC AV off, I discount that somewhat.  (Uninstalling and reinstalling AV sw can invite headaches Mcafee)

I will kill audio analysis 1st, (I may have tried that already, cant remember just now)
I'll get back on line and follow up, thanks
Any new ideas are welcome.

For testing purposes, you need to use a local library in order to determine if the QNAP is the problem.

I mean that you can't rule out a problem with the QNAP.  Remove it from your testing to see what happens.

what you don't say is the version of your Qnap...I have 370,000 files on a huge Qnap and have never experienced your issues....just saying

FYI..
You are correct.  When put media and library on locally, the problem disappears.
I will begin looking at network / QNAP bottlenecks.
Thanks.

When building a library, is it reading each flac entirely into local memory to read tags data?
...then moving on to the next file?

I have no doubt that setup and working  properly, my QNAP should be plenty capable.

I have exactly the same problem. 50K files stored on a QNAP TS-453A

I'm trying to set up a fresh installation of MC23. I get the same issues as the OP in this thread. The import gets to around a thousand and then slows to a crawl. At that rate it would take days to import.

I've tried this on two machines. A Windows 10 laptop (no antivirus, Win Defender off) using wifi. Got to 780 and slowed to almost no progress.

The second machine was Linux Mint Core i7, 16 gig of Ram and an ssd. This time it's on gigabit ethernet. Got to around 1000 (quicker than the laptop - probably the wired connection there) and again slowed to non existent progress.

Unfortunately, Roon imports the files very quickly with no problems. I also tried Media Monkey and whilst being slightly slower still got the job done.

Any suggestions as to why this is happening? I had no problems importing to MC with an ancient Netgear ReadyNas Duo.

So I played around with the SMB settings on the NAS and used SMB 3.0. It was previously set to SMB 2.1.

Both machines created their own libraries nice and quickly. Four hours for the laptop on wireless and a lot less than half that on the wired machine. I did them consecutively, not concurrently.

I have no idea whether the change to SMB 3.0 had any effect on the process but I didn't change anything else.

All's well that ends well.  ?
