UHD/HDR/3D Setup

I wish I could help but I seriously have no clue why it all of a sudden works for me.

--- Quote from: stricko on July 22, 2018, 03:52:57 am ---Just done a bit of an upgrade (projector to Optoma UHD51 and graphics card to GT1030) and was looking forward to 4k and UHD playback, but I've run into the same problems as people seem to be having on this thread. Set PC display to 4k, 4k stuff plays fine, 3d is displayed SBS, but projector doesn't recognise it as 3d. Set display to 1080p, 3d is fine, 4k is downscaled (as you'd expect). Sound familier?
I was sort of hoping that MC would deal with it all automatically, but I guess that is not the case.
I'll be having a play with some of the ideas in this (and other) threads, and I'll let you know how I'm getting on. (W10/64 up to date and latest Nvidia drivers). Cheers

there is no standard for 4k 3D ... so for frame pack 3D you need to output at 1080p (otherwise MadVR wil do top bottom if you try to play frane pack to 4K... or was it sbs ... dont remember)
there is option in MC Video Option that allows MC to switch video mode automatically ... if that fails to switch automatically ... then need to define separate profile in MadVR for 3D so it forces output to 1080p23 when 3D is detected

Thanks tij. I'm learning (a lot) as I go along here.
The automatic Display Setting option has been a real godsend since it was launched but from what I can read in the wiki, it's going to be too limited to crack this one. I've always used it in auto mode, which has been great; it happily deals with differing frame rates. But it seems to only able to group all videos with similar frame rates together. So there is a single option for all video at 23.976fps which I could use to force the display back to 1080p for 3d stuff. But I also have 4k files at 23.976fps.
I'm guessing that the categories for the custom Display Settings are based only on fps, and are defined within the software somewhere. It would be great if these were a) accessible, and b) configurable to allow factors other than fps. I stumbled across old archived wiki stuff that talked about setting display options at a file level. Was that all pre-Red October, or is it still about somewhere.
So if I'm right, this sort of pushes me towards madVR.... gulp. Very new territory for me I'm afraid, and a quick glance at the stuff on doom9 just confirms how little I know / have to learn. Is there a primer somewhere on how to set up Custom Video modes / madvr profiles? Ideally I like to continue using automatic detection / adjustment, but with an exception process to handle 3d.
And this is all just for 3d, I've yet to tackle the 4k issues (green video etc.)
Thanks again

I don't have a complete list of settings for supporting 4K and 1080p 3D, but I have it working, based on various threads around here. A couple of hints:
Don't use the Auto setting in MC Display Switching. Use the "Custom" setting and set the 4K resolutions you want. Do not concern yourself about 3D with these settings. Sure, Auto should work, but Custom made it work for me.
Find the 3D thread and only set what is specified for 3D. That basically means a couple of settings in madVR. You do not need to use madVR profiles. madVR will switch to 1080p when it detects 3D. Or at least I believe it is madVR doing the switch.
There is a bunch of other stuff, particularly if you want to set your Desktop to 4K as I have, but the above is a start.

I agree. I have messed with madVR a fair amount but don't feel like I have much of a grasp on it.
For a while I was manually changing MC's Display Switching when going from 4K which is now my normal view to 1080 for 3D. Like I said before for some reason now it all works. When I get a chance I'll get some screen shots of my Display Switching settings and my madVR settings.
