Device will not sync

Good day,

I downloaded the trial version but cannot sync my device to my computer. 

The computer I had the original software on died and was not able to be retrieved.  I believe it was the original version from a couple or more years ago.

I have been listening to the music that was on the device and the 128 gig micro card I inserted into it.  The trial system does not recognize the device files.

Is it because it is the original operating system not recognizing the trial version?  Do I have to purge the device and start over or can I salvage the massive amounts of music that took me days to originally uploaded and put on the device?  It wont even read the card itself when inserted into the computer.

I have till the 30th to decide if I want to purchase but am skeptical about losing all files on the device.  It may be better just to forget about it and use the device the way it is and not be able to sync it again which would be sad because yes it is the best digital media quality I can find. I want to edit, delete and add new music to it but I cannot.  Any suggestions?

Bolt sure what you mean by sync.

Please read Restoring a License on our wiki.

You can restore a backup of your library.

Wait, are you trying to sync a handheld? Are you using the 64-bit build of Media Center 23? If so, it currently doesn't have handheld support - you'd have to use the 32-bit to get handheld support working.

If it's not a handheld device you're trying to sync, disregard this post. :P

Thanks AD,

You are talking foreign to me.  The system I worked with was from the original download when I purchased the hand held a couple years back.  So I take it the original software was 64 bit and the new is 32 bit?  suggestions for change over?  Just purchase and download the new software and it will work?

There's two builds of Media Center 23 for Windows, a 32-bit and a newer 64-bit build. Currently the 64-bit build lacks handheld support (it's being worked on, no ETA though).

Easiest way to find out if you're using the 32-bit or 64-bit build of Media Center 23 on Windows is to open the trial version of MC you're using up, go to the Help menu and select About Media Center...



If at the top it says (64-bit) like the screenshot above you're using the 64-bit build of Media Center 23. If this is the case, I'd recommend trying the 32-bit build instead (which does support handhelds). I'm not sure if this is your problem (I admit, it's hard to understand from the first post, but it kinda sounds like you're trying to sync a handheld device and might be using the 64-bit version of Media Center 23 in a trial).

After reviewing all the previous posts I misled you by saying, "The files are not recognized by the trial version that are on my device".  My apologies. The device still has the original software and my new computer has the trial.

And judging by your reply regarding 32 and 64 bit, I agree, handheld is the 32 bit version and the 64 bit trial version is not recognizing it?   My version does not say the bit rate in parenthesis as does your screen shot. Mine just says 23.0.91

Please direct me on how to retrieve the 32 bit files from the handheld/micro card using the 32 bit version. Will they be recognized or converted to 64 bit once retrieved?

My version does not say the bit rate in parenthesis as does your screen shot. Mine just says 23.0.91

Then disregard all I said, you're using the 32-bit build.

Try what Jim suggested in restoring a backup.

I lost the computer with the original version and had no backup.  Or I just don't understand restore backup, sorry.

Just to make sure I understand you correctly:

1. you had old computer with old version of JRiver on it ... that computer had all your music files on it ... and this computer has died ... and all files on it cannot be retrieved

2. you had and still have a device (handheld) that has micro card in it, to which you sync music from old computer using old JRiver

3. you installed a trial JRiver on new computer ... connected handheld to it and JRiver cannot sync your files FROM handheld TO your new computer ... meaning JRiver will not add those files to new computer?

I do not use sync at the moment, but I believe sync function in JRiver is FROM computer TO handheld ... not other way around

I think the way to recover your old music and add them to new JRiver on new computer is ... connect your handheld to computer via USB ... copy old music from handheld to computer ... add copied music to JRiver library.

But I see a problem :

when you say "it", do you mean JRiver or Operating System of computer? ... if its OS, you might need to install drivers for your handheld

In any case it will be useful to know what your old computer was (Windows XP, Mac, or other) ... what new computer is (Windows 10, Mac, or other) ... what handheld model is (Samsung S7 or other)

Old computer Widows XP.  New computer Windows 10.  Hand held is a PONO. 

Why is my trial version in my computer a 32 bit and not 64 bit then?

You can use the 32 bit version of MC23 with Pono.  It should work.

Well ... you choose 32 or 64 bit when you download installer from JRiver

So ... when you plug your pono to WIndows 10 using USB ... does WIndows 10 recognise it (can you see your pono in Explorer)?

Thanks for the reply tij,

I have two days left so I hope we can figure it. 

Yes my windows 10 recognizes it.

When I open the Media center I get all the album images. When I push "sync now" I get a message that says: 
"None of the tracks can be transferred. Common errors include insufficient rights or unsupported files"

When I try to play a tune from a list it says:
"Something went wrong with playback. Details: The file could not be found. Check that the filename in the library matches the file name on disk."

I also get a massage saying "Media Center 23 is running, but there may be a problem Possible causes:
1. The program is also running under a different user account.
2. Media Center 23 and Media Server are both in Windows start up. You must remove one.
3. The program is not responding for an unknown reason.  Please reboot your computer. Verify that no other user accounts are running the program"

 I looked in windows start up and neither are on the list. 

If I chose the 64 bit upon purchase will it recognize the 32 bit files?

Can you copy files manually from pono to Windows? Then import copied files to JRiver library manually?

I seriously doubt you can sync from Pono to JRiver (I think sync works other way around ... aka from PC to handheld). Since Windows recognizes your Pono, I seriously suggest you copy your media files from pono to local hdd first (in case Pono goes bad and then you loose all your media). Then try importing those copied file to JRiver manually. Then try sync function (I would create a separate copy of those media before trying sync ... just in case)

I do not use sync function myself. But from other posts, 64 bit JRiver does not support sync function atm. So if sync function is what you need, stick with 32bit JRiver.

Media file support on 32bit and 64bit JRiver is same.

If you get that message it just means that some part of MC is still running when you tried to start MC again. So something went wrong and MC got stuck.

It usually isn't worth trying to work out what went wrong. It is a pretty rare issue unless there is a real Windows setup problem, or you are doing something unusual in your workflow. Just reboot the PC and start again. If this happens a lot though, you need to ask for help in fixing it.

If your trial has now expired so you can't test anymore, I would be confident your issues can be solved and MC will do what you want, as long as you have the PC/Windows skills to recognise and fix them.

Now;

1. The media files on the memory card will not be converted from 32bit to 64bit. They stay the same for both versions. Only the Media Center software is 32 or 64 bit.

2. Use the 32bit version of MC as it will work with Handheld sync, and should recognise a Pono connected to your PC. For simplicity, use the 32bit version of Media Center.

3. Do I understand correctly that the only copy of your audio files that you have are on the memory card? Or do you have them on another drive, or can you download them again from the original source? As tij suggested, you need to copy them from that memory card to a safe place on your new PC before you do anything else. It doesn't sound good that your new PC doesn't recognise the memory card when it is inserted into the PC. It should see the memory card and allow you to copy the files from the card to your PC using Windows Explorer. Do not purge your Pono device. If the memory card can't be read directly, but the audio files can be seen when you plug the Pono into your PC (by USB I assume, as I am not a Pono user), then do that and copy the files to your PC that way. Keep these files as a safe backup. Do not include these files in any MC import process. If you can, make a backup of them on a separate hard disk, or another memory card. You can never have too many backups.

4. You have lost you MC library by the sound of it. If you had the old MC set to store tags in your audio files then you should get a lot of information back when you import those audio files into a new copy of MC, with a new library. You probably won't get all information back. For example, if you had custom Views in MC, they are lost. If you didn't store Cover Art in the audio files, then they are also lost, but can be downloaded again easily enough. But if you are just using MC as provided with all the default views and so on, and then transferring audio files to the Pono for playback, that can all be done.

5. When you get a new version of MC running, and it starts up, don't let it import everything it finds. You will see a countdown in the Action Window at bottom left when you first start a new installation. Stop that countdown. Then create a second copy on your PC of the audio files you saved in step 3. above. Put them in a Place where the new MC installation can see them, then import the files into MC. So in something like C:\Music\ or D:\Music\ or similar, depending on how your new PC is set up. Once the import is finished you should have all your music working in an installation of MC23. Check that all that works and fix any issues you see.


Once you get that far, if you decide to go ahead, come back and ask for more help if you need it.


Note: If you don't want to upgrade to MC23, you could just download a copy of the old version you were using and restore your old licence to that. Search the Wiki for "Restoring a License" to find out how. Assuming that you were using a copy of MC before and not a Pono specific piece of software. I can't remember for sure if Pono had a custom piece of software or always used a version of MC. Anyway, if your software was from a couple of years ago it was probably MC21. Being a computer idiot, the advice you and others give is beyond my grasp.  It seems all foreign to me and creates more issues when I try to follow the procedures.

As of late my computer (yes windows 10 ugh!) has nothing but problems.  I did updates around the same time I started my trial of JRiver.  Since then I have had software issues that the computer store "fixed" but not quite as I am still having issues.  I cannot stream video from any source since and it is going back to the shop again today to deal with video playback that it seems to be unable to do. 

I am thinking of uninstalling JRiver to see if the video default it carries with it is the issue. 

I have copied the music files from my Pono to my computer and back it up regularly.  When transferring into JRiver it only takes some files and leaves others behind despite the fact I have them all selected.  After trying twice, I now have duplicates of all files and cannot find a way to delete the duplicates like the previous version had. It still left many hundred files behind.

It is very frustrating and I am tired of yelling at my computer as it does nothing to fix the issue.

All I want is trouble free music like I used to have.

Microsoft is breaking so many things with their Windows 10 updates these days.

Hopefully, the shop can fix the issues you have, and get you back to enjoying the music, and streaming video.

As long as the files that JRiver didn't pick up are still playable and haven't been corrupted, that issue is fixable. When you get your PC back.

Duplicates can be difficult to clean up. I would recommend you forget them until you get the rest of MC working, then deal with them.

Thanks Rod,

I got it back and it had driver issues.  They downloaded updated drivers and I am back in business.

Now would it be wise to remove JR from my computer and reinstall it? That would eliminate the duplication issue and I can maybe get some advice on how to reload my existing (saved from Pono) 32 bit songs to the new software without banging my head on the key board repeatedly. :)

First, do a manual Library backup. In the top MC menu, File > Library > Library Backup. You may want to change the proposed Zip file name to include "Before Clearing Library" or similar, but leave the date in the name.

Then no need to uninstall JRiver MC. Just click on "Playing Now", then "Playing from...etc", and then click on your Main Library, whatever it is named. It should be the library that is loaded when MC starts.

You will then see a "Clear Library" button on the right. Click that and your library will be cleared of all files and playlists, but your settings will remain.

Then check all your Auto Import settings again to make sure they will only import the files you want. Read the Auto Import Wiki if you aren't sure about something. You don't have to individually select all the files to import. Just set up Auto Import to watch the top level folder that holds all your audio files. i.e. If your music is stored in C:\Gregory\Music\[Artist]\[Album\etc., where [Artist] means all the artist subdirectories and [Album] means all the album sibdirectories, you just need to point MC Auto Import to C:\Gregory\Music\ to have MC find all your files.

This time MC should import all the files you have in the directory you pointed it at. The problem that caused some files to be "left behind" should have been cleared.

See how that goes.

Hey Rod,

I sat down to follow your instructions you posted but JRiver won't open, it says my trial is up.  I push Restore License but it wants the original registration number which I lost with the last computer, unless it is on the Pono.

When I push Purchase, it tells me the product is no longer available.

Suggestions?

You need to download the latest build from jriver.com and install it.

If you have an older license, you can use it if you install the version of MC that matches the license.

Yep, follow the link Jim posted and in there you will find a link to the Restore Page, which is how you will get your Registration Code back.

The email you receive from JRiver should tell you what version you were running. Once you know that, download the latest build of that version from the Old Versions page, install that, install the Registration Code for it, and then you should be able to go through the purchase process for MC23. Remember, when it comes time to download MC23 again, get the 32bit version so that it will sync with your Pono.

Never had any other address except for where I used to work and that email is no longer. It is gbrown@triton-env.com

pie06@telus.net is the only address I have ever had at home on my computer.

Receipts for licenses come from buy-button at jriver.  You could search your e-mail,  including any spam folder.

As stated in the earlier posts, I lost my computer with everything last year and am working on a new one with no spam or trash folders available to sift through.

I have had two emails in my life.

pie06@telus.net (live) and gbrown@triton-env.com (the one that no longer exists because I don't work there anymore).  I could not have registered with any other address.
