New Prices Begin April 1
« on: March 31, 2018, 06:36:22 pm »

Thanks to everyone who's upgraded!  We really appreciate your steady support.

Beginning tomorrow, we will increase the license cost of JRiver Media Center 24.

We've often heard that our marketing was lacking, so this January, we hired a New York marketing firm, BB and Co, to take a look at what we've been doing.  A week ago, we received a 200 page document with a lot of marketing terminology I didn't understand, but on page 3, I saw (and understood) this:

"Some of your audiophile competitors are charging many times the current JRiver license of $50.  You're leaving money on the table and we advise an immediate increase to the $400 level.  People will respect you more.  It will become the luxury product in your space."

While I agree we've kept the price too low for many years, I didn't think the $400 level was fair to our customers, so after a lot of discussions here, we've decided to set a level that we believe is fair and reasonable.  Here are the new prices, effective tomorrow, April 1:

JRiver Media Center 24 Prices

Windows     $195
OSX            $195
Linux           $195

Master License  $295  (Windows, OSX, and Linux)

Upgrades are $85 for a single license and $125 for a Master License.

Thanks, as always.

I'm late reading this but it probably would have fooled more people if the subject didn't explicitly state "April 1" -- say, maybe beginning this April or starting this April ... or some other.

Hehe. Although, on a more serious note, I did wonder quickly what other consumer software actually charge ~$200+ nowadays. Can't really think of many -- maybe Adobe Acrobat and other similar "professional" product suites that's geared more towards actual "production" rather than "consumption" of media, say, like Izotope's bundled software and plugins. But then, most of the bigger companies are switching to subscription models now as well so there's always that looming feeling of apprehension. To be clear, I'm okay even with software subscriptions, in general, so as long as people are still allowed to buy a perpetual licence version. In principle, one at least should have a choice. And, anyhows, for those companies that have now completely gone subscription only or are planning to eventually, I've pretty much been able to find "good enough" (not always better, but at least) free/cheaper substitutes for everything so far.

Okay... Going back to this year's April Fools, the ff. prank I found to be the most believable and jaw-dropping :o by far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkZl7Tf4r8I

Yeah, you really need to up your game guys!

I just viewed the video in your link. I must say that he went to a lot of trouble for the prank. It truly is the best I have seen so far. I really enjoyed some of the comments.
